my staffordshire bull terrier bitch whelped on 15/03/05 it was her 61 day she had one bitch pup naturally[stillborn] so i rushed her to vet within 25 minutes ,the vet recommended caesarian..
basically the vet stated that there was another 4 pups that had been dead for 24hours that the bitch had a virus and the toxins had spread into the womb as an upshot of this the bitch died within 3 hours of the caesarian.
i was wondreing has this happened to anybody and could they possibly clarify the reasons as i am extremly upset and would like some closure on this thanking you thomas

It is likely toxins released from the decaying pups causing toxaemia rather than a virus that killed the bitch, psssibly in clnjuntion with shock.  If it was a virus I woudl expect the vet to have said what viral disease this was.  Sadly bitches and women still do die while or shortly after giving birth.

I am sorry to hear of your loss - it is so sad for you.

Unfortunately, it does happen - and this is why we all look forward with trepidation to having a litter of puppies.

It sounds as though the bitch caught a virus and the pups died, resulting in the spread of toxins through her body in the way that Brainless describes. It is unfortunately a great and terrible loss to you, especially when you had so many hopes for your bitch and her puppies. Every time we lose a dog it is the worst time we have to face, I am so sorry  it must be awful for you.

You poor thing, my heart really goes out to you.  I'm reiterating what others have said already but you mustn't blame yourself.  This awful situation can happen to anyone - I've seen bitches owned by breeders with 40-odd years experience suffer the same fate.  Unfortunately, in many cases of septicaemia (which it sounds as though your poor dog had) there aren't really any clinical signs apart from a temperature, and the patient deteriorates very rapidly.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dear Thomas,

I've just read your post and what has happened is tragic - I can't begin to imagine what you are going through but hope you realise that there was obviously nothing else that could have been done in the circumstances.

I am very genuinely sorry for your loss and hope that the explanations other members have been able to provide will in time help you come to terms with what's happened.

{{{Bless you}}},  Teri
