Before anyone thinks I am trying to sell any pos pups please dont worry i am not telling any one what breed she is or where i am from
the reason i am on this site is my bitch is about 10 days to go it is her first litter

on checking her over making sure all is well cleaning her teats from now on i wash lightly every day as she still likes to lay in the garden
on a close look i tried to see if her milk has come through i just  tryed one of her teats well a bit of brown discharge came from one so tried others same happened never had this before  do you think i should ring my vet or has any one had this would be pleased if any of you could give any advise other then this she is fine eatting temp ok in good body still likes to go for small walks thank you

it sounds like she has got an infection maybe mastitious i would pop her along to the vets straight away for some antibiotics.

It sounds like it could be the foremilk (colostrum) which is needed for the puppies. Milk comes through at different times - sometimes a few days before the birth, other times not till after. If you're worried, pop her to the vet for a check, but otherwise keep an eye on her and check for excessive heat at any of the nipples, which would indicate possible trouble. Other than that I'd treat her as normal - personally I wouldn't be washing her every day though.

I've never known colostrum to be brown though.......  I thought fore milk was the nutrious part of the milk which came through first, and the 'hind' milk the thirst quenching bit - that was how it was always referred to when I had my babies anyway - maybe it's different for dogs??.....

Yes, I should have described colostrum as 'first milk' rather than 'foremilk' (it's been a busy day!). When I was breastfeeding I was told it was the other way about - the first milk in a feed was the thirst-quenching bit and the creamy, filler-upper milk came at the end.

In cows, colostrum is bright orange!, and if you don't strip out all the milk first you don't get the cream.

no i dont thinks thats colostrum, that only comes out after the pups are born. then the milk comes in second usually just before birth the teats have a waxy plug and some times a watery substance can be expelled or the milk is already in if it is colostrum it wouldn't be that colour, also you should check the mamaroy glands for ant heat or hard lumps, i think you should take her to the vet and have her checked better to be safe than sorry.
