Has anybody experience when their bitch is in season that they seem to get a bit constipated ?
Moose has been in season for nearly two weeks now and is seen wandering around tryng her best to do a poo and ends up doing four little ones in stead of one labrador sized one!
Is there any thing I can give to ease this without having the opposiate affect. She currently gets raw carrots as a supplement to her Bets juniior food .
Thanks

Add a little bit of oil to her food. Should help her.

I use liquid parafin, usually does the trick just after one dose. You can buy it in any chemist for about 90p for a small bottle and if you need a syringe they usually sell them for about 20p. I have a large breed and usually give about 4 or 5ml just once a day. My gran has a Tibetan Spaniel who was recently constipated (the dog not my gran ;-)), she gave her 2ml and the problem was sorted within 24hrs :-)

Without wanting to give away too many personal secrets :) It's a hormonal thing. Increase the oil in her diet and reduce the fat/dairy products (if she has any).
Good luck,

my standard yorkie suffered quite a lot with constipation. he would only eat pedigree chum chicken and game flavour and if shops run out of that particular flavour he would not eat anything which was one of the reasons for it, he would try to squeeze one out which without sounding vulgar, would'nt quite come out completely and so irritate him, so he would scrape his bottom along the floor squashing it all into his very wooley coat. The vet gave us castoroil which we had to give him in a syringe and it worked a treat back to normal. We used this every time to save having to bath him every time he wanted a pooh.

Lucy as you know Thistle is at the same stage as Moose and she hasn't had any problems with constipation. We had some slightly out of date petit filous which I gave her and they seemed to have the opposite effect.
Will it be obvious when Thistle is no longer in season? She has been a bit miserable and refused her breakfast a couple of mornings- normally unheard of!!

Hi Jane
It is a case of seeing when the bleeding has stopped and also when her bits have gone back to the normalish size ! It is going to be probably another week I would think when it is all over ! Can't wait as she is biting at the bit now to have a really good run off her lead !
