I'd really love to buy a boxer. My family have ahd dogs all my life but I've recently moved into my own home, with my girlfriend. I work shift but the shifts are all just 8 hours. I'd like to know whether people think it would be ok to have a puppy when I'm out of the house at night?

My husband works night shifts and I know how long he needs to sleep during the day - in effect the pup will be alone while you're out at work (8 hours plus travelling time) as well as the time you're asleep (another 6 hours at least). That's a long time in isolation for a pup, or will your girlfriend be home during the day?

I have 6 dogs and work 40 hours a week/8 hours a night.  I've found that my dogs are very adaptable, sleeping when I sleep, etc.  I am, however, permitted to leave work for my lunch break and come home for a 1/2 hour every night to let them outside.  They sleep while I'm gone, play for a few hours in the morning and then we go to bed.

An 8 hour stretch is a long time for a puppy to be alone.  You're talking, actually, at least 9 with the drive to and from.  It will be difficult to housetrain, obedience train, etc. unless you're gf is on a different shift.

Hi eight hrs is a awful long time to leave a boxer puppy or infact any puppy, boxers crave attention and can be very destructive if left to get bored. Have you considered your neighbours ie a crying puppy during the night might not be a ideal situation.
