Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / what do you ask when vetting new owners

my CKC has had a litter and im wondering what questions do you lot ask prospective new owners. thanks jane

My first question is 'have you had a dog before?'
Then if they say 'yes, we had a (preferably same breed) and lost it last year at a grand old age' I breath a sigh of relief. If they say no this is our first dog then it generally turns into a very long phone call as then loads more questions follow
Then next questions may be do you work, how many hours, have you the space, an enclosed garden, children, ages of children, have you met any of these dogs before, are you prepared for wees poo chewing, muddy feet etc.

I would also ask them what they know about the breed.   If they are 1st time dog owners, or previous dog owners but 1st time for your breed, it is good to know if they have done some research on the breed before making a decision to purchase.

Hi Jane

I genuinely hope you are enjoying your new puppies.  Please don't take this the wrong way as you have taken the trouble to seek advice from the forum but it is also worth remembering that people interested in buying puppies are thankfully becoming increasingly aware of the fact that not only should they be able to answer satisfactory questions from a responsible breeder, but that said breeder should also be able to answer questions posed by them too!  There have been several litters of your breed mentioned on this Forum only in the last week or so hence you could well find yourself being in competition for the best homes yet you don't seem to have researched how to raise and wean a litter before gong ahead and breeding one never mind thought about what information you may require of prospective owners or them of you :(  I sincerely hope you investigated and carried out the breed specific health tests on your bitch with satisfactory results and evidence of these and ensured the same could be proven to apply to the sire?

Regards, Teri

All the above questions. I also tell them I would like to visit the puppy and keep in regular contact. See what their reaction is to this.

Dont promise a puppy over the 'phone - if you think the caller sounds like a good owner, insist on meeting all the family first.
