- By Guest [gb] Date 15.03.05 21:16 UTC
i have finally found a lovely litter of puppys thats not too far away and cheap priced compared to a lot of breeders the ad said Kc reg with papers but when me and my husband went to see them we were told the papers had been applyed for and would be sent on afterwards, is this normal? i have been reading on another site that sometimes bad breeders do this so im worried i might have been conned. do you think anyone will buy my pup if the papers dont come because i really wanted one with kennel club paper so i could show :-(
help

Sometimes registration is late coming from the Kennel Club. It's always a risk (especially with a breeder who's charging a lot less than the average price for KC reg pups) but if you're sure you want that pup, make sure you get the breeder to sign a statement saying that KC Registration is applied for (dated) and will follow. That way if it turns out to be untrue you have a case with Trading Standards. You wouldn't be able to show your puppy though, so make sure it's the one you really really want, and not just because it's cheap. And selling the puppy on won't be an option - morally it'll be yours for life.

if it was for show then i probably would of left it to be honest as you only have the breeders word for it that the papers will be sent!if she was a repritable breeder im sure shed hold the puppy till the papers came through! if they dont get sent then you wont be able to show the pup.if it was for a pet then it wouldnt matter as much! i personnally wouldnt take a pup unless it had its papers and its perents had certificates for health checks.unless you new and trusted the breeder!taking puppy back wouldnt be an option for me ,but thats just my personal opinion!

Cant' you apply yourself if you have all the details?
- By kayc [gb] Date 15.03.05 23:03 UTC
Whispersmum, Only a breeder is allowed to register the pups.

What you could do, if you have a note of the names of the stud and bitch, is phone the kennel club and ask for confirmation that a litter is being registered.

Please don't be swayed by distance or cost when choosing your puppy.  If you want a puppy to potentially show, your main criteria should be a healthy, well raised puppy from health tested breeding stock that is known for producing puppies of good character and correct breed type.

Re. late paperwork - this is not necessarily a *dodgy* scenario :D  In my own litter of 8 pups, 6 were red, 1 was distinctly grey and another "suspiciously" grey/fawn.  The colour and markings of each puppy have to be declared against it's name on the documents so this caused us a dilemma. Despite the assistance of several experienced breeders the litter was 5 weeks old before the genuine colour of this "suspicious" grey was obvious - she was in fact a light fawn who turned warm RED by 12 weeks!  The foregoing caused my registration docs to be submitted when the litter was 5 weeks old instead of the intended a.s.a.p. after their birth  hence docs arrived a week after some pups were already homed   They were of course forwarded on ;)   So, even *Good breeders* can have *good reasons* for minor problems too!  regards, Teri :P

As teri said sometimes their are good reasons for late paperwork when i got my first bullmastiff her papers were forwarded to us we just made sure we had a receipt saying just that if we didnt get the paper work we wouldnt have sold her on are dogs are for life If you have no intentions on keeping pup if you dont get paper work dont buy it the dogs welfare should come first.:)

Hi,
From your post this is I assume a first time purchase of a puppy. Have you had a dog before? If you want a good quality puppy for the show ring price should be your last consideration. The puppy ideally should come from breeding stock which has been tested for relevant health problems under the British Veterinary Association (BVA) schemes. What breed are you hoping to buy? If you join us here we can help you a lot more.
It is an expensive hobby showing a dog with the average entry to a championship show costing £20 and often more, plus there is the cost of travelling to the shows, insurance, and anything else the show dog requires such as grooming equipment. Breeding from your pup once it is old enough can never repay the money you will spend to campaign your dog properly, unless you breed it so often that you become little more than a puppy farmer.
There is more to buying a puppy for show than meets the eye. Even experienced breeders "get it wrong", you only have to look at the hound group winner, who was sold as a pet, then rehomed with Jill Peak, for example, to know that even an experienced breeder can never tell when a puppy they are going to sell is the next big winner at Crufts or not, although they will have more idea than most other breeders.
As to registrations being late, this is not uncommon, but a reputable breeder will be happy to keep the puppy, or supply you with a contract of sale stating that the puppy will be registered and the papers will be sent along later. This is something you should speak to the breeder of your puppy about. It seems to me that having told the breeder of this "cheaper and closer" litter, you are now worried you may not have selected the right puppy for you, in which case I would advise you to pull out of buying this puppy, so that he/she gets a chance at a home that is right for it, and you get the puppy that is right for you. Buying a puppy is not as easy as it seems, before anybody is allowed to even think of having one of my puppies I always insist they go home and sleep on their decision before we go any further.

You should ask yourself why this litter is cheap.
- By SharonM Date 16.03.05 10:52 UTC
I agree, if the pups are cheaper than everywhere else, ask yourself why!

Over Christmas I had two litters, for some reason, the KC registered BOTH litters to the same dam, when the papers arrived I phoned them, had to send all papers back for amendment, when they came back 10 days later.................they had done exactly the same, registered both to the same dam!!  How is that possible?  Surely their computer wouldn't allow you to register two litters to one dam, 4 days apart!!

By the time the correct papers came through it was 2/3 weeks after the pups had gone to their new homes!   But what I did do was scan the litter registration form and gave the owners copies, then also scanned the registration papers and gave them a copy of that......even though it had the wrong dam details.

A complete mess up, but we got there in the end!

Do as the others have said, ask for the KC name of the mum,  phone the KC they will tell you if a litter has been registered against her.

I too had to wait to register my pups last year as it wasnt clear what colours they were! When my new owners came I gave them a photocopy of the litter application and the application number from the kennel club so that people could check the application progress if they wanted to. The application normally takes around two weeks to go through, any longer and I would be concerned. Also I agree with the others here, if you are planning to show then you should be prepared to pay top rates for a good well bred dog from health tested parents. Be prepared that your dog may not turn out to be show quality, but should still be a much loved pet first and foremost :) .I would be very wary of buying a show quality dog 'cheaply' with no evidence of registration.
