I have a 20 month old Dal, Bobby he is an absolute angel, apparently he should be really hyperactive etc etc but he has a lovely temperament and is just a loving big dollop!! I have so many people asking if he will go to stud but I don't know how to go about it & whether he would be suitable, can anyone help...

Hi BooBoo, have a look at the Breeding Board, the first post there gives all the advice you are likely to need.

Has he been BAER tested with a certificate to prove he has bilateral hearing? No dalmatian should be bred from without this proof. To be used at stud he'll need to be a good example of his breed; there are plenty of Champions at stud, so he'll have to have something good to offer the breed. The best way to find this out is to show him - if he does well, then bitch owners will ask if they can use him. If he doesn't do well, they won't.

Remember, using him at stud could change his nature from the soft, soppy boy he is now to an overly masculine, possibly dog-aggressive animal - although this doesn't always happen. You will also have lifelong moral responsibility for any puppies he sires, maybe having to take them into your home if the new owners can't keep them.

Also, have a read of the first post on the Breeding forum of this site.

If your dog is not bouncey and boisterous then I would also consider a full health test, if ok, then perhaps his temperament is not suitable anyway because they should be outgoing, friendly, not hesitant and active.
