I TOOK MY DOGS ONTO THE MOOR THIS WEEKEND AND MY PUP KEPT ON TRYING TO EAT HORSE POO I HEARD SOMEWHERE THAT THEIR IS SOMETHING IN IT THAT ATTRACTS THEM TO IT ANYONE NO IF THIS IS TRUE ::)

Mine certainly don't eat it - but only cos they're sick of it now with 5 horses in the fields :D :D

They are attracted to the enzymes/greens and simply coz it tastes grrreeaat :D

I have heard it reccomended, to let dogs with poor appetites eat as much horse poop as they want,it stimulates the appetite.Just be sure the horses have not been recently wormed as this is dangerous for dogs due to the heavy chemicals.

My dogs eat horse poop sometimes,only a little,they would rather roll in it :rolleyes: They also love chewing on hoof offcuts.

they were dartmoor ponies so i no they hadnt been wormed she seemed to be enjoying it but made me feel sick had to pull her away my collie just looked at her all disgusted it hasnt seemed to affected her though.it has to be something in it as she just walked away from the rabbit poo lol :)

Did she have a larger than normal appetite that night,LOL :D

Some dogs love foal manure because of the milk :D

I tend to just distract my dog or ignore her if she eats it, and she is the only dog amongst our group who largely ignores manure - the other dogs who have mostly been told off for eating it tend to make a beeline for it LOL.

Please be aware that dogs that eat manure from a recently wormed horse will be extremely ill and in most cases die. You must discourage your dogs from eating manure at all costs. You will not be able to tell when a horse has been wormed, so why risk it.

My dogs love it. I just dont let them kiss me for a while after :) Since it is part digested greens it has some useful enzimes in it, given the choice most dogs if presented with a dead animal will start with the stomach contents. Mine dont restrice themselves to horse poo, they love rabbit, deer, sheep as well.

So do mine, but certainly in the case of horse poo, for the reasons Admin mention, I try to stop it.

This may sound daft but wouldn't a dog get worms from and unwormed horse?

Thats a very good point didnt think of that.

Mine used to make a beeline for it at every opportunity..... then i started feeding a raw diet, which included a fair amount of raw veg... now they are more interested in rolling in it than eating it!
