About to get a new puppy and would like to know any tipps for toilet training. i've already got a four year old boxer and he seemed to take ages to train, i know some people have sorted this in a matter of 5/6 months.
Hi Bear :)
We are currently on our 3rd puppy, he's a 15 week old HWV and he has pretty much grasped the idea that toileting is to be done outside, we do have accidents occassionally, of course, he's still a baby and sometimes he either get very excited and looses control or it our fault for not taking him out often enough :D
When we first brought him home at 8 weeks we took him outside every 20/30 mins during the day, after food, after play/excitement, such as you coming home, after he woke up etc etc and during the night he was up every 2/3 hours or so, he slept in a box beside me(I slept on the settee for 3 weeks when we first had him), I took him out last hting before he went in his box then during the night if the comfort of my arm dropped in the box didn't settle him then I would take him out. His boby clock had been 'set' by his breeder for around 7.30am so he was up then and out then ready for breakfast at 8am!
He's in the crate at night now, from 10/11pm until 7 ish without having to go out and can sleep for 1.5hrs during the day, about 3 times I'd say he takes a nap during the day :) In the time we have had him has only wee'd in the crate once, he sees it as a den and therefore doens't want to 'mess' in it, crates really are a godsend, as I'm sure many people on here would agree!!
Saying that I wouldn't expect too much from him during the day until he is much older, say getting on a year, but as I said he can go an hour an a half during the day no probs but someone HAS to be there when he wakes to take him outside :D
I hope this helps, good luck with your new pup, remember there is always advice freely and readily available here at CDs if you have any probs!!

crates are a godsend ide definatly agree we havent had a wet crate out of our daschund yet! then again she is 6! wen i get another dacs next year ill definatlly be purchasing another crate. toilet training is wat i dred most.aparantly the way to do it is to put puppy out every morn and nite, after food ,sleep and after playing for half an hour.but you have to watch there everymove.and praise them wen they do it outside! thats wat isabel told me. i think it was isabel! aparently she has here dogs trained in 10days! x
Get on a schedule. Feed and water at the same time everyday...don't free feed and don't free water until the houstraining is complete. Utilize a crate, they're a fantastic tool, but make sure you read up on the proper way to introduce your pup to it.
Your puppy will have to get out between 10 and 30 minutes after it eats, drinks and plays. After waking, outside is immediate.
Do not let your puppy confuse play time with potty time. Put your pup on a lead, walk him to the spot you want him to go to the toilet, repeat 'potty' or 'toilet' softly as you stand still. When he goes praise with 'good toilet' or whatever word you use and walk back in the house. AFTER your dog has gone to the toilet outside you can take him back out for some play.
