I am wanting to get a dog. I have lots of time and space. I remember seeing an artical about some breeds becoming unfashionable and possibly in danger of dying out. Can anyone direct me to a list of these dog and I've tried searching for over an hour now. I know the English Setter was one but there were about ten or more on the list.
Thank you

I seem to remember that the Bloodhound was one and the Dandy Dinmont terrier was another...

It's vunrable breeds for one, not endangerd.  I didn't think the English setter was one :confussed: I know the two setters are GOrdan and Irish Red and White  Theres a topic "UK rare breed" or similar where someone has listed all the breeds.  Be careful though.  My breed is "vunrable" but we only had such a small number last year as we found new problems (CLAD and vWD) of which any dog/bitch who is a carrier was considerd "seriously think before breeding, and only breed to a clear dog/bitch" It is what was said by the club, we had many dogs diagnosed as carrier who where going to be bred but owners decided not to.  ANy decent breeder would have kept the pups till 12 weeks having them microchiped and DNA tested before they where sold so the owners knew if they where getting a clear or carrier.  Many breeders didn't want this hassle for pups for extra 4 weeks when they should be in their new home getting attached to their new ownerIs.

I don't know about other breeds but thats why my breed had fewer registrations.  Now we have DNA it should be alot better!

Here is the list of Vulnerable breeds.

Thank you for your help. I did not think of 'vunerable'. I am suprised that greyhounds are on the list, I thought there were lots left over from racing, or are they different? A Setters or a Curly Coated Retriever will be my first choice. I am surprised that Clumber Spaniels and King Charles Spaniels are on the list but I understand the point you make about being registered/ DNA etc.
In the first instance would I be best to contact the breed rescue? I would not be intending to breed, just give two vunerable dogs a good home and take it from there.
Thank you

Don't forget, King Charles Spaniels are a different breed to Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, which are by no means vulnerable! ;)

Thank you, I didn't realise that, I will have a look. I do like spaniels so I will add them to the list.

It is a common mistake of mixing the Cavaliers with the Charlies. They come from the same dogs but from the reign of William & Mary the flatter  faces with a domed skull were fashionable so the King Charles were selectively bred for flat "baby"like faces.

Pictures of the breed called The English Toy Spaniel & the Blenhiem Spaniels from 1400's to the  the 1690's show them with longer muzzles etc like the Cavaliers !

The quest to rebuild the Cavalier(from Charles's I/ II time)started in 1926 & the breed was recognized eventually as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
