Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Why won't my male stud?

I have a male  who refuses a female yorkie in heat...he's bred with her before & they've had 2 other litters together...she's more then willing but he just snaps at her and runs off!!??...This is now my 3rd attempt to get them together and he still wants nothing to do with her!!...He'll be 8 yrs. old in April...do you think he's getting to old now?? ...Her owner said she's been in heat since 3/1/05...Also how often do tiny dogs come into heat??...I'm wondering if maybe we missed the "right" time?....Thanks!...:) Deb

There is no way that the bitch could of been in season since the beginning of January. I think that some one must off got the dates wrong. I have heard of a male dog still been used as a stud at 13 yrs old so I would doubt if 8 is too old.

Perhaps Debbie's using the American way of writing dates, where they put the month first? In which case the bitch came in season on 1st March. I hope so anyway, otherwise there's something very wrong.

I think the poster is maybe from the US where they seem to like to put the month first and then the day and yer, so she has been in season sicne 1st of March.

I would say she isn't ready yet.  bitches are often keen and pester the dog,a dn an expereinced stud will tell her to go to hell until she is ready.

It definately sounds like she wasn't caught at the right time, if she was i'm positive he would of been interested.  When breeding from my bitch i found that just one day made a huge difference.

Debbie, if I were the bitch's owner, and she had been in season since 3rd January, I would have her to the vet's PDQ, as I would be suspecting a pyometra - which can be life-threatening.

I think thats more likely...in which case it could still be a bit early

If she only came in season on 1/3/05, then today could only be day 10 or 11 depending on if you count the 1st as day one, so there is a chance she's not ready yet!
