Any tips any one could give for a stud dogs 1st time? I have a bitch that "knows the ropes" and this will be my boys first attempt. Any help would be great.

He will know what to do when the time is right, there will be a faire bit of flirting going on first, but he will know.  Good luck

She is day 9 at the minute, he is paying no attention at all lol. Im hoping by day 12 to 14 things will move more quickly (fingers crossed) He's a beautiful boy, such heavy bone and substance, small ears on a large head, I really would like to see what he produces. Ahhhh well i suppose we shall see given a few days haha. Ill keep you guys posted

there could be days and days yet, you will know when he is ready.

Or he may not manage it at all!  We have a 'dog' and wanted to use him for stud with a proven bitch, although she stood for him, he just couldn't manage it, even took him to a very experienced stud dog owner for help, but no, no mating occured :-(

Good luck, I hope it all works out for you!

what breed is he?
- By Bears_mum [gb] Date 11.03.05 15:15 UTC
We've had progress today, he is mounting her every opertunity he gets. But i dont think she is quite ready as he keeps "getting in" but we never get a tie. She's only on day 10, and last time she was mated was on days 12 and 14, so i would imagine she's not ready just yet. But thank goodness he is now showing he's keen :-)

Admin: breed removed. No adverts please. PM the information

Try him only once a day, or else you'll have no idea when any pups are due.

How old is he. we have a 6 year old who will not go near a bitch until she is ready

He is 18 months old. He is showing alot of interest with her, not yet had a tie so will just let him try her tomorrow maybe or leave till sunday. Either way i will keep my fingers crossed. Im just happy he's finally showing interest lol.

I would of thought 18 months was a bit young, I know most breeders recommend the hip score at 2 years and they do not mature until there 2-3 years, have you got his test done? I don't want to put a dampener on your breeding but some health problems  don't present them self's until they mature
- By Bears_mum [gb] Date 12.03.05 17:21 UTC
Hips are tested at 12 months of age. Most breeders breed their bitches between 18 and 24 months. 18 months is not young by any means. Ive heard and known top breeders use a dog at stud at 12 months. Please do not take this the wrong way but i know the health test required in my breed and know what age they can and can not be bred, and wouldnt do anything that would put my dog and thier offspring at risk.

I'm sorry but my breed are only half the size ands mature faster than yours and I would never dream of mating mien at 18 months.  Our breed club code of ethics states minimum of two years of age to whelp, but it is rare for most bitches to ahve a litter much before their third birthday.  After all what is the hurry, she has years left ahead of her to have a couple of litters before she is 8 years old.

Why do i get the feeling some people on this board assume because i have asked for advise tht i do not know about my breed and the breeding ethics? Please give me some credit. Its not the bitch in question here, its the male. The bitch is fine to go on and have a litter next season or the season after (not back to back!).

I know that if nature allows then this beautiful pair will result in a beautiful litter. If not then there is always next time round. But it is NORMAL for ***** breeders to breed from a male of 18 months. Can supply you with a list if you'd like to PM me.

It's nothing personal, Bears Mum! The trouble is there have been very many posts from people asking for advice on breeding when they barely recognise one end of a dog from another that it's never safe to assume what degree of knowledge or experience any poster may have.

Well i have been in my breed for 4 years, but been around the breed for almost 8. I spent many many many amounts of time and effort into this breed before jumping the gun, and i am very proud of where i am today. (big head billy lol) I just really needed advise on my akita stud, not a questionaire on my breeding knowledge. Unfortunately it looks sad... My girl is standing and pushing her back end into him... Only managed a slip mating :-( She's day 12 tomorrow, and have an extra pair of hands on deck for help in the form of a breeder of 17yrs lol so maybe... just maybe we'll get some place :-D

Of course i will let you all know. If we get a tie i'll be shouting from the roof lol
