Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 'Snuffling' puppy

Can anyone advise please, puppies are now three weeks old, doing well, but today one of them has started making 'snuffling' noises with its nose.  It definitely seems to be coming from the nose area, not the chest or throat.  When she goes to sleep the noise stops, this has only started happening today, does anyone have any ideas/advice?  They are cocker spaniels, not advertising as they are all spoken for.  Thanks.

Hi there,

I'd take the puppy to the vet - they are still extremely young and can go downhill quite rapidly if something IS wrong :(   Don't want to be an alarmist but I'm sure you would rather have a possibly wasted trip than leave it thinking it's probably nothing and it turn out to be a problem.

Good luck, sending {{hugs}} to the little folk ;)

One of my puppies started snuffling after meals from mum, we had it to the vets many times, it turned out to be puppy was eating too fast and not swallowing all the milk, some was going down to the lungs. We were told to rub puppy and swing them if this happened to clear the lungs.... May not be the same thing, but just thought you'd like to know our puppy made it to be a happy healthy doggie :-)

yes it does seem to happen just after feeding, so it could be that.  All is quiet and clear now, so I will be observant at the next feed time and try what you suggest, otherwise I will check with the vet on Monday.  I tried her with a little solid food for the first time yesterday and she stuck her face in it and started snuffling, so it could be a little going into the lungs.  The other two pups are fine.  They are getting up on their feet now and starting to play, so sweet!

Best of luck, i know how worrying this can be lol. We just picked them up and rubbed their ribs, then swung them upside down slightly (not to fast or you'll end up wearing their lunch lol). Just try your best to clear the lungs (if this is even what it is). I would definately get checked at the vets though, little pups get ill so quickly :-(

This happened to my little pup at 6 days old, rushed her to vets and she had pneumonia, luckily we were in time and with some treatment and care she pulled through !
Good luck
Lydia
