Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How much is it to breed dogs?
- By anxies [gb] Date 12.03.05 11:03 UTC
Hi there in a few years and with a lot of research and learning I am hoping to start breeding from my bitch in the meantime i am trying to get some realisic advice from people who have been there and done that.
I have a lovely Border Terrier bitch puppy who is looking promising at the moment temperment and looks wise but i'm in very early days with her yet so am not getting my hopes too high yet but if all goes to plan i want to do things right and make sure the breed is kept right and to the highest standard.  The thing is i wanted to know what is the average price of tests and treatment registering pups so on???
I cant seem to find out much about DNA testing (should i do that for example), i definately want to do hip and eye tests but have no idea regarding price.
I rung my vet up to ask but she hasnt got back to me yet and i have a sneaky suspicion she isnt going to either.
Could any of you guys help me and i'd be most grateful.

Thanks

Anne

The first person you should be talking to is the breeder of your puppy.   Let her be your mentor - if she knows her breed, she will know whether your girl is suitable or not, and also which lines would complement hers.

Start talking to her now, hopefully, you will be able to forge a relationship which will work well for you.   If you are unfortunate enough to have bought a puppy from someone who doesn't wish to help you, then join your breed society, and let them mentor you.

I should have said in the first place - has your puppy got an endorsement on her registration?  This is common in any case, but you will need to talk to your breeder about getting it lifted if your girl does successfully pass all health tests.

Good luck

What a nice change, someone doing it properly. Well done Anne, I'm sure you'll have puppies to be proud of. Good Luck!

Thank you for the lovely compliment Husky hopefully all will go to plan for now i'm just having fun with her.  I have really fallen in love with the breed and will find it such a honour to keep it going to a high standard!
I'm hoping over the next few month to make some like minded friends with simular breeds through my training club and ring craft when i go and then eventually at the shows.
To be honest I wont be doing this for any financial gain as i truely love animals but i would like to make friends in the dog world and have some real fun with a wonderful life changing new hobbie.  Also to those of you worry about me not devoting to this full time i am an at home mom anyway so would give to this almost 100%

Hi there Margot,

No my breeder is letting me breed off her but he wants to check her over first when she is old enough the only thing i cant under contract do and would never do because i do not believe in putting the pup/dog through it is export.
My breeder is very good i just live very near to him and i am worried he'd think me a bit of a watsit thinking about breeding now.  For now i'm going to train her for competing her and see where that goes i'm just tryng to see what costs i'm letting myself in for.  Not that i'll moan i'll no doubt find every minute rewarding in some way.

Ive just payed £67 for the 2 eye tests my breed has. The hip score will cost between £120-£200

Cost will depend a lot of where you live and what tests you need.

I own a medium sized breed where stud fees are the price of a puppy, and we are required to Hip Score and Eye test.  You also need to reckon in the costs of travelling to the stud, possibley several times, and equipment with a first litter like whelping box heat pads/Lamps.  Puppy Pens etc.  with just these you might fit it all into around a £1000.  If you intend to breed on from the pup you keep to establish a line fo your own, you may want to invest in a nice Kennel and run for  puppies to ahve space outdoors in the day once bigger.  So that would set yopu back another £500.  If things don't go well and a C se4ction is needed add on around another £500.

Just had my bitch DNA Profilled cost around £15 through the Kennel Club, eye test for PHPV and HC cost around £30, Registering puppies costs around £15 each if you want 5 generation pedigree on posh certificate showing champs in red, £6 each for just 5 or 3 generation pedigree.  Our bitch is now micro chipped, dna profilled and has had recommended tests for the breed and we have applied to become members of the accredited breeders scheme. Good luck!

Actually it's £12 each to register puppies - the cost of printed pedigrees (optional) is on top of that.

LOL I admit if you dont know its a bit daunting so far i am trying to use the internet to my advantage and learn all i can there is not much on what lines to use but i have plenty of time to find out about that, I live in Rugeley Staffordshire and am madly trying to find out as much as i can.  I'm lucky really my hubby is very handy at doing generally everything and is very accommodating and understanding so making of a run and out door kennel is not too much of a problem.  To be honest though in the early days the dogs will be home raised we have a decent sized house/garden so they could have a room adapted for pups no problem.  Money wise I know it might be quite a lot or it might be fine but am ready for that.
Anyway thank you all so much for all your great advice, if there are any border terrier breeders out there who dont mind me bending there ear i'd be very happy.
Thanks a lot

Like said, let your breeder guide you, but I would also suggest talking to other exhibitors and breeders of border terriers.  Take all advice in and see what happend.  Lok at dogs you like in the show ring.  I know someone who rights down a list off all the faults in her bitch, then what she wants to improve on, then lists all the faults in the dog and looks to see if there are any faults being doubled.  She will do this for all possile stud dogs.  Might be worth doing.

Also talk to people about lines.  When you are looking at stud dpgs, get their pedigree and put it with your bitches and see what it looks like, are you doubling up on anything etc, looks at pictures, or if possible the actully dogs) of 3 generations back, maybe more.  A true breeder who does the best for their breed will spend hours looking at these things, the internet can make it easy for you!

health checks your breeder should know, also if you can'tact the breed club they should tell you.  Not all breeds yet need DNA as not everything has a DNA test.

Most of all good luck, enjoy you hobby of starting the shows and remember that you won't know everything but talk to lots of different people.  I have seen the Border terrier year book, if you don't already have it, it looks to have some excellent information in aswell as pictures of other dogs.

Have fun.

As you see you can very easily come out of this breeding losing money. I as many others on here have experienced. I breed my Akita only once. The pups were both born dead by section. Its safe to say we lost around £1000. But thats the chance you take.
Before we went ahead I made sure we had the money available to cover the cost of anything like that.

ive never bred nor to i plan to, but from talkin to diff breeders its suggested u have at least £1000 in ur bank to start with and be prepared to lose alot of money if things go wrong :(
