Will a puppy not lie in its own mess? puppy pens have been suggested to me not sure if this will confine too much. Wouldnt like to think of pup lying in wee/poo whilst I was out.
True. I have had only 2 litters of pups and they all did their bussiness away from where they slept.
P.S Although it doesnt stop them from playing and fighting in it.

Its true you will have to sometimes wash pooey paws but you will even if you have a kitchen the size of Buck Palace's, they just play through it. I hope you are not worrying too much about these unpleasant aspects because everyone with a puppy gets them in spades :)
If you put bedding at one end there is every chance they will not soil that, although they may choose to drag it along to where the poo is :) I would use readily washable bedding like vetbed.

I always found the tricky bit is what to wash first, if you wash the dogs first they have a chance to walk(or more likely roll) through it before you can clean the floor. If you do the floor first they are busy transfering it elsewhere so you make more cleaning. This is especially the case if you are tired/ in a hurry/ have guest about to walk through the door. <rolleyes>

Thats the beauty of having a puppy pen, plenty of clean kitchen floor to put your cleaned up, pooped out puppies while you clean the pen out :)
Oh I had a pen but he managed to spray it outside at times :o

Please don't leave a puppy in ' cage ' for 6 hours three times per week. It will almost certainly lie in it's own excrement. It will be lonely, confused and stressed. It makes my blood boil when people expect a dog to just amuse itself while the owner works...then fall into the role of happy family pet purely at the owners convienience. I'm not talking about people who have well established older dogs and perhaps have a change in working patterns...but people who know full well they will be working regularly and yet still go out and purchase a creature that thrives on social interaction...I'm sorry but it just makes me want to cry...

I shied away from crate training when my lot were little, it just wasn't for me. It was only recently someone was telling me how their dog loved theirs. I bought two huge (even by mal standards) crates, placed lilac fur rugs inside each of them. And yes my dogs seem to really like them, the doors are never closed, they're never locked in. They choose when to go in and lie down etc The crates are for their convienience not mine :)

Do you mean a crate? During the day? I think everyone would agree with that, but a puppy pen is rather different you would use a size to suit the puppy and it should allow plenty of area for the puppy to toilet away from its bedding should it wish but, as has been already said, even in a large room and even left for as little as an hour, some puppies will contrive to wander through it and even soil their bed because it doesn't bother them too much

I got the two confused there as well. Even without a pup pen my lot have all peed/poohed on their beds....and worse 'shudder' :D
