Topic Dog Boards / Health / Mystery Virus
- By Naomi [gb] Date 16.05.02 09:33 UTC
Has anyone had this weeks copy of Dog World? There is an article on page 6 entitled 'Show dog crud' - is it the same Virus? It is about a virus caught at dog shows by both dogs and humans... the same symptoms as described on earlier post hmmm.
- By issysmum [gb] Date 16.05.02 09:46 UTC
Does that mean I have to tell the GP, I've got crud?? :D I knew exercising was bad for your health but I never imagined dog showing was :(

Edit : If anyone has this article could they please scan it and send me a copy - I'm going to the doctors tomorrow for more tests and it'd be nice to be able to offer them some info. fiona.bray@surfanytime.co.uk Thanks

I was sent this link from one of the lists I was on. Makes interesting reading especially if humans are getting it too!

for five days poor old Zac's paws and ears was hot for a couple days ,But he is fine now we will have to watch out for us now just incase.I print this off to keep a check on the symptom's

That is so bizarre! Exact match of the symptoms, and seems we were really lucky that cleo didn't pick it up as she was on the bed with the poorly man for most of that week...
Thanks Bec, at least now we know! Unfortunately any serious bout of gut bacteria can also bring on IBS, so now my bloke smells of peppermint the whole time - gives me a clue what its going to like when he's an old git though ;)
- By patricia [gb] Date 16.05.02 15:20 UTC
What is the peppermint for then sweetie Is it good for dogs

no, not for dogs, but good for the mans tummy, supposedly settles IBS down. Seems that Mark got rather a bad bout of the mystery illness too... only we think he caught it in France. Had billions of tests done, and couldn't find anything wrong - seems we were looking in the wrong places - Thanks so much Bec, its really put his mind at rest :D

What now BARF??

Campylobacters in food
However, the bacteria are delicate and they are destroyed by cooking. Any raw meat may be contaminated with campylobacters, poultry constitute the most prolific source; On the other hand the number of bacteria that must be swallowed to produce an illness is very small and it only needs a few transferred, say, from an uncooked chicken to a piece of bread to cause infection.

quoted from http://www.amm.co.uk/ AMM Directory of Medical Microbiology Services in the UK (slight edit)

OK kitchen cleanliness is OK but when the food is contaminated..... I would rather not feed it to my dogs.

Hi Longdog, c/bacter is widely spread in the environment ie soils, water etc, its also in milk as well as meat.It is naturally present in healthy animals & birds, not just dogs & cats without having any effect. I dont see how they can be any more at risk by eating raw food. A lot of dogs are exposed to soil & ponds & puddles much more than they are to raw food. Cooking the meat will destroy it & this is an option. And thats what its all about, alternatives to dry/complete.

The point is not just the dogs and puddles, ponds, soil etc but the extra contaminants in the raw food. Additional is the risk to us humans with the possible cross contamination. Why take the extra risk?? Particularly where they could be a pregnant human around.

A couple of yrs ago my daughter came to visit with her friend who had a baby about 9mths old with her.As the day progressed the baby became more & more unsettled & started to have loose stools, by the evening it was clear she had a tummy bug. Following day one of my dogs went down with it & over the next couple of days they were all down with it. Dogs can also be at risk from us. This was when I was feeding all in one. Life itself is a big risk. We all have to make our own mind up after weighing up all the facts.

Hi all
I had to have 1 of my staffs put down on the 19th april,on the 17th in the evening i noticed that her breathing wasent quiet normal had very slite cought and a bit of a runie noise but it was clear discarge but she was eatting ok,eat her tea then when i turned my back nicked tods food as well so wasent too worryed decided to take her to vets next mornning as might have mild kennel cought,
But all was quiet duering night, got up next morning in hurry as i had bad tum once i mannaged to get out of toilet but was feeling realy bad ,went to kitchen to get imodium pluse and found poor misty on her side and unable to stand,
Rung a freind few doors away as i new i couldent get to the vets she came straight away, her eyes were fixed not rolling put she had ice cold paws she was fitting slightly she couldent even sit up or lift her head but new we was there as she waged tail she was then rushed to my vets were she was given a calcium jab at which she brought up large amounts of flem, she didnt have a temp she was put on drip and given valium and bloods were taken and antibiotics given,
the blood results came back ok so was keepted 40% serdateted.
Buy then a packet of tablets later i was able to stay in touch with my vet,but there was no change,The next day brought the news only thing that had changed was the fits had slightly increased, she hadent been out that day and wasnt anythink she could have eaten as i have 7 foot wall round garden no one could have feed her anythink,All my dogs are on complete mix they have dog treats but dont give them our food as i dont want to start them begging for food when were eatting all there food is placed in there bowls which are cleaned and disenfected at each meal,
they had but her drugs to try and stop fitting but didnt help, her temp stayed normal ,but her breathing got slightly worse and still wasent able to stand but could lift her head and responded to me talking to her,
Buy evening still no change and i whent back to vets to see her i pinched her back paws these were still ice cold but she moved it a little but when i done the same with front there was no responce, arfter a talk with the vets the only thing they could do would be to keep her under serdation and keep try the drugs for the next 4 days when they would then bring her of serdation and see what happened,But there was 50%chance that she now had some brain damage, there was a chance that she might never walk due to what ever had caused this in first place or that she could die from heat attack when they tryed to reduce the serdatetion as this would have to be done over a few hours,
So arfter a long talk and takeing all into consideration i desided that i couldent put her throught this not knowing how much pain she might have to go throught for the next 4 days just to be put down at the end of it all or lose her from heat attack or come out of it all unable to walk or brain damaged,
So i arsked for them to put here to sleep then and there as at the time she was cuddled up agaist us and seemed fairly happy.
ill never know why this happened or what caused it all i know is my baby was only 2 years old just startting her life and should of had alot of happy years a head of her,i still have her mum and dad and her litter sister but i think its bad enoth loseing a young dog but worse when you dont know why,
Now one of them has a runny nose, coughs once ect im watching them this all started with a little bit of clear discharge just like a cold, please please take care and be very aware.
she had alot of the same simptoms of the storys in dogs world it could of been the mystry viruse it might not never know.

ps sorry about the long read.

Hi everyone, talk about coincidence! Grandaughter had tests done last Friday as she had been suffering from tummy upset for several days. Results just back & its campylobacter. She is 5. 7yr brother, mum & dad are all fine.Dr not given her anything for it, said it will run it`s course. Lot of it going around he said as well. Can you believe that!

PS Fiona what happened at the hospital with your tests? What did they say?
- By issysmum [gb] Date 21.05.02 12:58 UTC
According to the hospital I'm not pg :) I knew that anyway but they insisted on telling me. The tests came back as positive for campylobactor and I have to rest and drink plenty - water though, not Archers :(

The hospital were great though and I'm now booked in for another scan in a fortnights time to check out a huge cyst on my left ovary, which has been giving me some pain.

Thanks for asking,

Fiona

*HUGS* Fiona :)

I had a huge cyst on one ovary (discovered when I was sterilised) they drained it and I have had no problems since so try not to worry about it :)

Melody - Hope you feel much better soon
- By issysmum [gb] Date 21.05.02 15:06 UTC
It's been drained once already - done when I had Issy. It could be leaking a bit which might explain why I feel so iffy so I'm back on anti-biotics.

I thought I was sterilised when I had Issy but accoriding to this recent scan it wasn't done, all is present and correct and in full functioning order!! It was a huge shock as we hadn't exactly been being 'careful' since Issy was born :D

I know the consultant was about to start the procedure but I then started bleeding heavily and lost over 3 pints of blood and passed out :(

Well I told my new breeder about this and he said I have never heard of this,He judges in the ring?He said dogs cannot give humans gastric bugs & vice versa? but I am sending him a copy of the one I printed from the board.A few weeks ago Zac had a very similar illness that lasted a few days.

Pat
- By Christine Date 22.05.02 08:23 UTC
Hi Patricia strange he doesn`t know about it. But humans & dogs (aswell as other animals) definitely can transfer bugs between the two
