Hi, My name is Jenny and I am currently studying a Canine behaviour course. The module I am working on at present is all about mating behaviour.
I am however having rel problems finding an answer to the following question.
" Give Reasons why a bitch might not come into season"?.
I have only had male dogs so don't know much about bitches.

Can somebody help me?

Thanks

Jenny

Hi Jenny

The most logical one is that she has been speyed.
Some bitches have long intervals between seasons - up to a couple of years I believe
Some breeds only come in once a year
It is possible to have a hermaphrodite (? sp) that looks like a bitch externally but has none of the working bits.

Doesn't a hermaphrodite possess genitalia of both sexes????

Canine Hypothyroidism would possibly cause lack of heat cycles & overall infertility.
Diabetes might also do the same.
good luck in your research.

I groom a dog that is a hermaphrodite. She has a penis growing from the top of her vagina! (sorry couldnt think of any other way to put it!) She has no testicles but the penis cannot be removed because of the blood supply to it apparently. She leaks urine almost continually.

Some breeds, of which I have one bitch, seem to only come into season once a year through their hormones. I have another who appears to never actually come in season, but she does, its just very very hard to detect....known as a silent season. Once again, down to hormones.

Hi sam join the club this has been happening to me for the past three years
I cant plan anything , as without the puppies the plan has gone down the swanee . I wondered when I started the dogs on the b.a.r.f. diet would things change that way . No it dident not yet anyway , I live in hope . I have been speaking to vet all the way .It is hormonal but as alice is six years old now she is out of the breeding plan Babs has now decided to have thyroid trouble has the bald stripes , so although she is getting better , it is now back to the drawing board , but  with what , Mari

A farmer friend of mine who lived in the North of Scotland had a collie bitch who never came in season until they moved to the Midlands. The bitch had her first season and first litter at 14 years old(not planned).
In racing greyhounds it is found that bitches who race over the greater distances usually come in season every 6 months but bitches who are sprinters vary from 9 months to a year. I have owned both types and found this to be the case. I have no reason for it though.

In some cases living with an extremely dominant bitch might prevent a much weaker bitch from coming into season - goes back to the wolf pack when only the alpha bitch mates and produces puppies. Other kinds of upsets might upset a bitches hormones as well.
