Do you need to empty your dogs anal gland and if so how often and how?
My sister in law gets her dog groomed and they empty her dogs anal glands as part of the deal. I do my own grooming but I've never done the anal bit. Any Advice would be much appreciated!

If it aint broke - don't fix it ;) Many dogs will go an entire life time without needing the anal glands expressing, some need it every few weeks. It may depend on diet, but a dog whose glands need doing will often scoot along the floor, eat grass, and/or chew their feet...... You really need a vet or a vet nurse to show you how to do it properly though.

<<<<<<<<<chew their feet>>>>>>>>>>>>
Why?????????
Beano did this, but didnt realise it was because of the anal glands. Knew the bottom Scooting was. He was done last night, so will see if he stops chewing his feet!!! LOL

Nope the veternary nurse!!!!!! And didnt charge me.
She said she is kinder than the vet as uses KY jelly and squeezes them gently where the vets just use their fingers and squeeze hard, so more uncomfortable for the dog!!!!!
For the sake of £7.50 I will get the nurse to do it every time LOL

Yes, mine chewed his back feet when the glands needed emptying, apparently it's quite common. I always knew he needed doing - not now though, it got so frequent that he had to have them out.

mine bites her back legs, policy to take the pair of them up there to get it done. I'll get my hubby to do it on Saturday and my male dog hates the vet! We have to jam him in the door to give him his injectons so god help the vet if he starts tinkering with his backside!!!
