Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Is this rule right?

Hi there,

I was wondering what the rule was for entering the any variety class at a show. We have two wheaten terriers puppies and we want to enter them in an open show but the problem is, is there isn't a separate class for dogs a bitches so they will both be in together and they also will be in with their litter sister. At the last show we entered we had our two in the wheaten class and the sister in AV terrier. So we thought I would be a good idea to do that again. She we put our bitch in AV, but we then had a phone call for the show sectary saying that we can't put the bitch in AV as there is a class for wheatens. Is this right?

Definition of classes, A.V not separately classified: for breeds of dogs which no separate breed classes are scheduled.
As they have a wheaton class they can't be entered in the A.V class.
Good luck when you go.

Hi not as straight forward as it seems, is this an open show held on the group system or not and is it an AVNSC  class or just an AV terrier class also is there a puppy class for Wheatens or is it just an open class

If there is a clas for you breed you must enter that first but can also enter AV terrier. If there is no breed class then you can enter AVNSC  and AV. Best AVNSC qualifies to go forward for best in group/show...AV doesn't

The rules are if there is a puppy breed class you must enter it if you want to enter the AV classes, but if there is no puppy class then you do no have to enter the breed classes

KC R&R F(1)3.54j(1)if there is no breed puppy class then you can enter AV puppy classes but not the AVNSC puppy classes

If you have any problems quote that rule ! taken sraight from the red book 2004/2005

Exactly Moonmaiden no puppy breed class then they can enter av terrier puppy class

You can certainly enter Any Variety Terrier PUPPY if there are classes for the breed but no puppy breed class. But no you cannot enter AV Puppy if there's a SCWT Puppy class and you don't enter it.

The rule is as follows,

A dog is not eligible for entry in Variety classes unless also entered and susequently exhibited in a breed class where such a class is provided for which it is eligible. Exemptions from this regulation are:- a puppy, unless a class for dogs under 12 months of age for which it is eligible is provided in the breed.

Hope this helps,

Dawn R.

Thank you all for your replies they have been really helpful apart from the fact that the dog can't be put in av terrier puppy like we wanted! :D The last show was an open show without a puppy class in the wheaten group so we could enter AV puppy. This one has a wheaten puppy class so we can't enter AV puppy. Thanks guy, once again I can rely on you champdoggers to give me the right information! :D

You CAN enter AV puppy but you MUST also enter the wheaten puppy class.

Sarah is there not the option of junior?  or even putting one of them in Post grad?  As long as they are placed in the top 4 they can challenge for best puppy if they are the highest place puppy!

ice-queen - they could challenge for best puppy if the dog is an unbeaten puppy regardless of its placing.

I stand corrected, I thought I read somewhere or I was told that you must be placed in the top 4!

I'm still learning!

They could be unplaced as long as there was not a puppy in their class placed above them. I know a Cavalier breeder who often puts a dog in a higher class so they can challenge for best puppy in breed  :O

But the judge does not have to call them in to challenge!!!!

I found that one out recently after a little "debate"

As they usually call for all unbeaten puppies she often gets into the challengs & has had a res best puppy twice at Ch Shows & several Best puppies in breed at open shows LOLOL she came unstuck at one show as my then 6 1/2 month old puppy went BOB Her face was a picture LOLOLOLOL as she was stood outside the ring waiting to challenge ! :D

My puppy at her first show went RBPIS at a Group show after going second in Post Grad.
