Stop a puppy rocking back. Her front legs end up far too forward and the more I place them in the correct position the more she rocks back! Help anyone??

Lynn

PS: she will stand still and let people go over her and her movement is lovely, just this that spoils the outline

If you pull their tail backwards (only slightly, don't hurt the dog) then the dog will naturally rock forward. If you do this and give the command rock, you will eventually be able to say rock and the dog will correct itself. It works with Kiera but not on command yet.
Helps if the dog has a tail though.

Probably don't know what I'm talking about as I free stand but would have thought if instead of holding the head you moved your hand in front of the dog , she would move toward it. Jackie H

My Bracco does this, he ends up looking like a rocking horse. Place the dogs front legs further under it than you think is correct and when you hold the tail push slightly foward, the dog will tilt foward. As soon as I touch my Braccos tail now he corrects himself and tilts foward over his front legs.
Good luck

This used to happen to me with my first wire. Try standing her the opposite way to how you "normally" stand her. Rather than lifting her front into position (if you do this) just walk her into the stance and correct her front legs if they need it. If this doesn't work you could bait her.

Hope this helps

my breed is freestanding but have also trained one to stack - he is also a rocking horse - both when stacking and freestanding, one way which i have encourage him to stand over his sholders is to wind him up with his favorate toy or food get him to stand and then throw the toy/food just in front keeping him standing which brings him up over his sholders - i then progressed onto standing him and then just holding it out infront of him where he cant reach
whilst i know you cant really do this in the ring, through doing it at home and training has improved him - and now even pretending to throw somthing seems to have worked

This happened to me and my boy and I was told it usually happens whilst they are puppys until they develop stronger and can balance themselves more, they often grow out of it. Like Diane says place the front legs under a bit further and push the tail, I still have to push his tail sometimes if he's being a lazy sod and leaning or whatever. I vaguely remember being told to bring the back legs out a little wider than normal to help with the balance.....I think that's what I was told anyway :-)
