Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Whelping Box and Floor Disinfectant
- By colliecrew [gb] Date 04.03.05 10:49 UTC
I was hoping somebody might be able to recommend a disinfectant for me to use for cleaning of whelping box and floor and other area's of the house. Obviously I require something that is safe to be used around very young pups. It would also be helpful if I could use a diluted form of the disinfectant to wipe down my other dogs feet when they have been out in order to prevent any spread of infection they may have carried in. I sort of need a one-disinfectant-fits-all kind of thing lol Is there such a product? and if so, where can I buy it? Many thanks for any replies

I use a product called parvoviricide - which I get in a large (5 litre container) from the Professional Choice company - you dilute it down, can use it for floors, walls, I soak a mat in it, and you can also use it when washing the bedding.   You can also make it up into a spray so that you spray the air. This is (I hope) the link for it:-http://www.ruvio.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Out/index.htm

Hope that helps

Absolutely Margot!  I've used it for nearly 20 years and it's kept me and mine safe when coming back from dog shows and even when I've had kennel cough in the grooming parlour and puppies indoors!!
I make up a bottle and keep it inside the front door.  I have a carpet sample outside which I soak in the stuff.  Everyone coming in walks on it and if there if any additional risk then I spray people and dogs as they come in too!

I had it recommended to me too - it's great stuff ;)

Would say to OP that you can buy it in 1 ltr size container too (darned if I can remember where I got mine because the makers' site didn't give that option  - but it was definitely on-line ) - it's VERY concentrated so if you manage to get through just that amount it will be a miracle :D

I'm using Trigene which I obtained from my vet.  I just went on their recommendation but it seems very effective so far.

Coming from a nursing background ,is it possible to use Milton solution(Sodium Hypochlorite)?????
If it's good enough for babies is it good enough for puppies?
- By Isabel Date 04.03.05 20:03 UTC
Yes I use Milton a lot in my kitchen, surfaces etc, as you don't have to be too concerned about residual left.  I also use Savlon, anything without phenol should be OK.  You know a phenol product by its tendancy to go cloudy when mixed with water.

Hi Betty,

As mentioned by another poster this probaby contains phenol (don't have a bottle of Dettol handy to double check:) ) but it does go cloudy/white in water.

The point of using a specific veterinary approved product such as Parvo-Virucide is that it also has the added benefit of safeguarding the premises around the puppies environment from various lethal diseases which could be innocently carried back into the household by other pets or visitors owning pets of their own too ... such as Parvo (as the names suggests), distemper, kennel cough etc

Hi Christine,

as the OP says

>It would also be helpful if I could use a diluted form of the disinfectant to wipe down my other dogs feet when they have been out in order to prevent any spread of infection they may have carried in. I sort of need a one-disinfectant-fits-all kind of thing<

am I missing something about the properties to be found in Savlon   Does it have the ability to kill the diseases mentioned in my post which you've replied to?  If it does it is certainly a cheaper and more readily available alternative but one that to my personal knowledge has been hiding it's light under a bushel :P

Hi Teri, not sure but I like it & I wouldn`t wash my dogs paws down with parvovirucide, not sure thats what it`s intended for? & again not sure but does parvovirucid state it kills parvo distemper etc?
I was using that & also another one called virkon? when my litter got parvo to wash outside & had bowls to do wellies & shoes etc. Not sure now but doesn`t it say not be used indoors?
Anyway for wiping down the dogs paws I used savlon, it is a disinfection & it smells nice as well :)

Hi Christine,

>not sure but does parvovirucid state it kills parvo distemper etc?<

From label on bottle "Specifically formulated against disease causing organisms of dogs, cats, birds and small pet animals - Parvovirus, distemper, rabies, influenza, kennel cough, panleukopaenia, E.coli, salmonella, ringworm"

Also from label "Dog safe, Cat safe, Pet safe"

>Not sure now but doesn`t it say not be used indoors?<

No, doesn't say that ;)   says can be used for all animal quarters and contact areas,  mopped or sprayed, "after excess has settled animals may be returned to their quarters, *ideally* (my emphasis) when dry"

Sprayed liberally when I had my litter on every surface and every person entering my home, it did not stain clothing, various fabrics both natural and man-made, carpets, bedding etc and certainly had no (and continues to have no) adverse reaction when the dogs are walked across treated areas - which for my dogs means mainly carpets indoors and paving slabs and sandstone outdoors.

Regards, Teri
Who incidentally likes the pleasant non-chemical scent of it too :P

Hi Teri, I was using one called parvocide not the one being talked about here sorry, my mistake! (had a look back in my diaries & checked) :) I`m almost sure it said for outdoor use/not in confined space or something similar to that butit was nearly 4yrs ago I used it.
My last litter I used colloidal silver :)

Hi again,

I wash runs and kennels with parvocide daily and if I was using a whelping bed that had been used before I would scrub that out with parvocide before the bitch starts using it. For the last 3 weeks of pregnancy the bitch is not exersised outside the garden and I dip my shoes in parvocide on returning from shopping etc. If I have been anywhere "doggy" ( vets/shows) I also change my clothes before seeing to pregnant/newly whelped bitches.
Once the pups are born I continue the same but spray and wipe the whelping bed out daily with Dettox.
