Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Are they coming??? - Continued
- By Guest [gb] Date 05.03.05 21:41 UTC
In response to my earlier post - Are they coming??? i have to say that i am somewhat offended by the nature of certain peoples replys to what was a genuine question. By 13 yr old daughter made the post ( and the majority of my website) without my knowledge, and as im sure youll appreciate, she is as anxious as i am over there arrival. I didnt realise people would be so sarcastic in resonse to a childs question!

For the record, yes, when i bought my first sammy, i did not know much about the breed characteristics or there behaviour, but having got the puppy home i immediately bought every book available, making it my personal aim to fully understand these wonderful dogs. I would now, without meaning to sound big headed, consider myself to know more about these dogs and their behaviour than most.

My second sammy was purchased only after i had fully involved myself with the breed, and any one that has owned a sammy will know that they soon become a much loved member of the family.

After numerous phone calls and visits to the vets - summer went on 4th march, the vet made it clear that, in his opinion, we wouldnt be expecting the pupies until after this weekend. Summer does not have any temperature fluctuation and is currently not displaying any other symptons of labour.

Archer- yes we did extensive research before deciding wether to breed the two sammys, and again, to reiterate, it was my daughter who made the post, not i. As for compatability and health tests, please dont be so naive as to think that i would 'in breed my dogs', my respect for my dogs is too great for this. Both dogs were fully health checked before any hint of breeeding entered my mind, and are both hip scored and fully eye tested. As my daughter made the website, i think she focused on the joy she gets from these PETS, rather than the accompanying hip score figures, and test results. Personally i would not have made a website or advertised the puppies until i knew for sure that all were well.

As for the rather obnoxious post of 'Money money money!' i can assure you that i do not need the 'money' from their sale, having run a succesful buisness for the past thirty odd years!  3 puppies are already promised to family members providing they are healthy. If i had my way, i would keep the puppies and buy a bigger house in which to accomadate them!

Im sure youll appreciate that, as a guest, i cannot reply directly to your comments, so feel free to 'slag' me off as you have done previously, frankly i do not care, I know my dogs better than anyone else, and do not need comments which are of a spiteful nature!

I would ask that admins dont delete the post, as i would not deem it to be offensive in any way, just setting some facts straight.

Nice to know that some members of the site are so helpful!!!

Regards,
Elaine

Elaine,

I assume you have the same name as your daughter, as that is also how the last post was signed. May I also commend her on her website design and use of the English language, very advanced for one so young.

I must say, having seen your site that I am astonished that by a million to one chance, the best stud dog for your bitch happened to be THE VERY DOG THAT YOU OWN!!! What are the odds???!!  Of course, as a breed expert, I expect you are as suprised by this as I am!

Hello Elaine,

Firstly, if you re-read the original post there was nothing in that to suggest that board members were dealing with a child so to be critical of the tone used in replying to a "child's question!" is a little unfair.  Surely you can see that?

Secondly, on reading your website there was nothing to suggest that IT was created by a child - was there?  That a 13 year old has the ability to design, create and maintain a website is very much to her credit and I commend you on having such a bright girl ;) however, as a mother I supervised my daughter's internet access in her youth and so would have been aware of the content being put on the site - as you should have been.  On hindsight, might it not have been better to encourage your child to create a site to showcase her family pets and have no mention of encouraging contact from anyone for a planned litter?

Thirdly, I don't intend to go into a diatribe about the perceived rights and wrongs about what you may know or not about your chosen breed - never mind the actual responsibilities of breeding   - but I am surprised that anyone young enough to have a 13 yr old daughter is old enough to have owned and learned about 30 breeds (according to your site  )

Hi Elaine,

I consider myself to be a newcomer to the breed having only been involved with Samoyeds since 1996. Even though i have owned these dogs for 9 years have friends and mentors in the breed and own many breed books,  i am still learning about this breed every day and would never consider myself or claim to be more knowledgeble than others :(

There are some mistakes and misrepresentions on your website which can only be expected from a 13 yr old, but maybe you should rectify them so that it is evident that you have researched the breed sufficiently?

For example the breed is catagorised as a large breed on your site, but in fact it is medium sized at between 18-22 inches - Breed Standard

Samoyeds are not great for allergy sufferers as stated on the site. Allergies are usually caused by the dander in the coat or the hair itself, which the Sam has in abundance!

Also the two Captain Scott expeditions seem to have been merged into one on your site :)

Elaine,

>i have owned these dogs for 9 years have friends and mentors in the breed and own many breed books,  i am still learning about this breed every day and would never consider myself or claim to be more knowledgeble than others<

Your above statement is very true - not only of your personal involvement with Samoyeds but of any of us in our chosen breeds :)  As far as I am concerned regardless of how long one has spent living with a breed, researching it, studying it and enjoying intense discussions with long standing and respected breed specialists, whether as novice owner or life long established mentor we all have to be open to the fact that there is always the possibility of learning more ;)

In any field of life those with most knowledge and commanding respect are those who keep an open mind and are always on a quest for furthering their understanding of their given subject and this is even more essential when dealing with a living breathing being, be that human or animal.

Hopefully your helpful and non-judgemental reply will encourage the original poster to join the forum and seek to both exchange experiences and learn from others on here.

Best wishes, Teri :)

I'd just like to add, Guest that having read your website and read about the awful state your bitch was in when you got her and the poor start in life she had I think you have been grossly unfair and irresponsible breeding from her anyway.  Apart from the fact that this bitch has been through so much already, you should only consider breeding from the very best if you want any chance on improving a dog's line and your bitch cannot ever be so with the pschological scars she will carry from her early days.

Elaine, please note that due some people who breed dogs do seem to be in it for one thing, money, us people who learn and look into breeding and purchasing a puppy, will go to all lenghts and get very upset if they feel that someone is not doing right for the breed.  We did own one possible stud dog and 2 brood bitches, but even if they where the only dogs left on earth we would never have bred them together, the lines wern't compatiable at all. Very rarely will anyone who is bettering the breed who owns 2 dogs will breed.

I think maybe you should have a talk with your daughter, although others have mentiond she must be highly intelligent with computers to make the website (I cann't comment as I haven't seen your website myself) but maybe she is to immature to understand about posting on publis forums.  Also maybe learn abit more about the breed, givibng the wrong facts can be very dangerous.

I think in future you should monitor your daughters internet use.  She has caused some upset on these boards for members who dearly love their dogs, their breed and all dogs in general (Not saying you dont)

Another point.  Are you sure you want to be selling to family?  or even giving?  Are they just having a sammy because you can give them one or do they all truly want a puppy.  My parents bred a litter, my grandad wanted a pup, he paid fair and square like anyone else (with discount but dog also in partnership with us)

Just re-read your post and relised you also work on your website, surely then you should be able to pick up on many mistakes made about the breeds charcteristics, seens you have researched them so well you should know everything!  Although I am still learning aboutb my two breeds, and I guess later to day I will be learning a whole lot more at our club show where I can talk to more experianced people and I've been in this breed for 10 years!

I see that you have deleted your website Elaine.  Probably a good idea!

Very clever daughter you have...shame she didn't think to include the important things such as registration and health test results. My dogs are PETS!!!...they also come from health tested stock ...as should ALL pets!
Strange isn't it..I purchased my dogs from 2 of the countries top breeders ....they have won consistantly at champ shows(including RCC at Crufts) and are of good temperament...and yet I consider they are not of suitable quality to be bred from. You on the other hand went and purchased a pup from a breeder who not only bred multiple litters from multilple breeds but also allowed you to purchase one from a breed you knew nothing about....reputable ..I DON'T THINK SO!! You then went back for another and they are OF COURSE suitable breeding material and compatible to use together!! What do you expect from a site of dog lovers....'oh well done ...lovely fluffy puppies!!!...get real...
