Does anybody know of an insurance company that will cover bitches for whelping??

If you find one that will insure for an economic figure - please let us all know!

As long as it's cheaper than my vets bill over christmas I'm not really worried...........so anything under £2850 is good!  :-)

God that was some vet bill.  I know you had a section but what was all the other costs :-)) crazy
- By SharonM Date 06.03.05 05:11 UTC
That was the total cost of 2  bitches at the same time, with various problems...........one c-section, the other retained a dead pup which had to be manually removed (and of course it was a Sunday) plus now one of my girls has a mammary tumour brought on by the hormones of pregnancy :-(

Petplan do one but you have to have it running for a year in place and have evidence of successful whelps before it becomes valid.. ( that is what I remember from asking about 3 years ago ;-) )

What if its a maiden bitch?  or successful whelps with other bitches?
- By ManxPat [im] Date 05.03.05 23:34 UTC
Hi SharonM
I have just done petplan who will do whelping insurance. I have a maiden bitch which did not matter - it is almost £20.00 per month.

That sounds really good!

I do have another dog on premium with no excess, and two cats so it may take it down a bit. I've just renewed and am waiting for the paperwork.

Wow thats cheap i pay just over £20 a month for my pup insurance.
- By Blue Date 06.03.05 00:50 UTC
Sharon the maiden bitch didn't matter but you had to show some evidence of successful trouble free litters and you had to run the policy for a full year before it came in force. Now that is when I spoke to the a few years back, I was planning my first litter. You need to phone petplan breeders section.

It is not quite as cut and dry though , HOW do I know this?? not many on here have it ;-))

Hi Blue

I've been on the Pet Plan "show breeder plan" since way back in the 80's...LOL Yes its a little more expensive, but I have found them to be great, haven't needed them often, but when one of my girls needed a C section, there was no problems re paying out, they settled direct with the vet within a week, just nice to know its there if I were to ever need it :)

Peilady, :-)

Do you know if the show breeder plan different in anyway or costs from the breeder plan???    Wonder why the call it the show breeder as opposed breeders plan. Is there 2 different ones?? :-)

I looked into it 4 years ago but I think I worked out at the time I had to pay over £300 before I would actually be covered.  Then the £300 a year in Subs. I don't think I breed enough to justify the additional costs and I felt I had a fantastically reasonable vet anyway.   I had a c-section last litter but that is the only one out of 4 litters so really for me I don't think I have spend £1200 in "addition fees"( which I would have paid in monthly payments over 4 years) that I wouldn't normally spend with puppies anyway on whelping costs.  I would imagine the excess is not the cheapest either do you know what it is??

It probably is better if you have more than one litter a year I guess :-)

Hi Blue

I am lucky if I breed one litter a year, let alone more....LOL  The excess in my area as it goes off location is only around £85, and unfortunately my vet isn't one of the cheapest so does work out better for me personally, plus it gives that added peace of mind knowing the insurance is always there if ever needed.  I pay just under £22.00 a month for each of my two girls on the show breeder policy if this helps :)

Oops nearly forgot, not sure why there is a breeder and a show/ breeder plan, I've always had the show/breeder plan since way back in the 80's and all the annual policy shows Show Breeder... Mmmm curious myself...LOL
