Topic Dog Boards / General / did i do the right thing?

i need some advice about this.
my grandma had a springer spaniel who was quite old i thnk she was about 16 anyway the dog had suffered a stroke and then a few weeks later she changed dramatically she couldnt hardly walk and when she did only walked in circles and became deaf and blind in her old age but my gran stil loved her then things came to the worst when she had yet another stroke but not as serious but i finally had to tell my gran the best thing was to put her to sleep even my mum said it would be for the best as the dog could hardly walk or breath and she didnt eat and was losing weight my nan finally agreed and we took her to the vets a few days ago.
now im wondering if i did the right thing in telling my nan to let her be put to sleep i feel really bad about taking the dog from her but i also could not bear to see the dog like that just seeing her walk in circles and walking into things was heart breaking.
my nan is so upset she cries all the time and i feel guilty as im thinking im the one thats made her cry what should i do

YOu did the right thing, its not fair to let a dog suffer like that.  I think everyone who has to have a dog PTS always questions "was it right" after, I know we did.  Just remind yourself, would you like to walk in circles, not eating but still have lived to a good old age.  It is natural to feel upset and your gran I asum had her dog for 16 years, thats a very strong bond that is built in those years.  Its like loosing a family member to some people.

I'm sure you did do the best thing for the dog and your gran in the long run.

take care

Yes I agree you did the right thing...........she would have suffered more if you let her continue, she had a good long life obviously well cared for and loved, your nan will be upset, 16 years is a long time!  Just remind her of all the good times they had together!

You did the right thing :) You Nan will be fine, she is upset but not at you :)

Why not suggest in a week or so about maybe considering a rescue dog as she sounds although she loved the companionship and I am sure it would help :)

To extend on what Lucy said, maybe consider a retired greyhound?  NOw your gran might not like them, so ok, but they all seem to have a calm nature and only need about 10 mins exercise at a time I have heard and seem the most gentle cretures around.  Maybe just what an elderly (didn't know a nicer way of putting it, sorry) person needs.  Might be a useless idea, but its one idea! :)

Better a week too early rather than a day to late.

You did the right thing and one of the hardest things in life.

I'm so sorry for you, having to make the decision, and for your Grandma, losing her beloved companion.

You did do the right thing - as Carolyn said, it's always better a day too early than a day too late - and it does sound as if it was the right time.   Grandma will be sad just now, but then she will remember the good times - be glad she was with you, not sad that she's gone.
