has enyone ever had a bitch eat all the way up
to whelping or does every bitch stop eating 18/24
hrs before they whelping

One of mine ate in the morning and had the pups at 5pm but the other 2 didn't :-)

My bitch ate her supper 2 hours before whelping. Each bitch is different.

One of mine ate up to about 2-3 hours before whelping

My girl didn't want to eat any meals on the day she whelped but her temp seemed to rise slightly in the evening and she was mooching for food when we'd finished supper so I gave her some left over roast chicken which she woolfed down ;)  (I assumed she was not going to produce that night :rolleyes: ) but just 15 MINUTES later, she barfed it up and about 5 minutes after that had her first puppy :D

Lesson seems to be there are no hard and fast rules.

Just goes to show - we might read all the books - but the bitches don't :D

One of my bitches had 2 puppies, had a dinner break (ate her dinner as usual!) and then went back & had 2 more. Food is high priority with my breed :D
