Last night I slipped in the garden on ice. Crawled to bed on my hands and knees and made sure that my rather painful left ankle was elevated all night! Still could not weight bear this morning so hubby took me to A&E. I have torn the ligaments in my left ankle and have crutches as I cannot walk unsupported!!!! I also have Barney (rather large briard) aged 8 months and the kids aged 3 and 5!!!! Not quite sure how I will cope. Hubby will have to go back to work on Monday and it seems that it will probably be 4 - 6 week recovery!!!

I will keep in touch.

Oh dear :( I feel for you. My cousin fell over and broke BOTH her elbows when her three children were all babies so I know how hard life will be for the next few weeks

*hug*

Ooh ouch. Poor you, sounds like it is time to find out who your friends are and call in loads of favours :) {big hug}

Bless you! I know it will be hard but try and follow the advice to rest and elevate it. I too have kids and when I tore my ligaments I felt I had to carry on after resting it for a week (I couldn't have walked then if I'd tried), this did more damage and I now have a very dodgy ankle which means I fall over fairly frequently (and it's not too much booze!). Torn ligaments can take longer to repair than a fracture.
Hope your friends and family can support you. :)

Hi Julia,

Rotten luck :(  My OH managed to pull the ligaments (not as bad as tearing them I know) in his foot a couple of weeks ago and was strapped up, had to keep foot elevated etc.  He found walking with a stick OK but as you need much more help than that and crutches are not the most practical is there any chance your local hospital or health centre could lend you a walking frame?  Safer than crutches for balance and also probably safer and more practical around the kids and dogs ;)

Good luck, Teri

You poor thing -I tore the ligaments in my ankle -it was hell -the doctor said its worse than breaking it -My only advice would be don't try and rush back into using it too soon -I did and ended up doing it again :eek: now my ankle is very weak

Julia, surely a reason to get OH at it :D He can now wait on you hand and foot,(inbetween working) you could tell him the more you rest the sooner you will be up and about again ;)

Seriously now, It must be awful for you, I hope that you heal quickly. ;) Take it easy and try not to get too frustrated. I find that when I am incapacitated my phone bill goes up horrendously :rolleyes: Sheer boredom.

Take care :)

You have my sympathy. I've got incredibly weak ankles after doing martial arts from the age of 5 yrs old. It used to be that my ankles would buckle whilst I was walking or running, not too severe, then I progressed to the odd sprain. The last two times I've gone down it's been torn ligaments. The last time especially I have never known pain like it. I had a huge hobbit like black/purple foot twisted to one side. I actually heard it crunch ands felt like I'd stamped on the base of my leg bone as if my foot had buckled to one side completely. I was in the middle of nowhere and had to rely on the dogs to get me home. (thank god for large breeds).  The hospital wouldn't give me crutches as they said it would encourage me not to rest :(  After 3 days my knees were covered in carpet burns, the only way I could get around the house was to crawl. My toes were freezing due to the amount of swelling and I actually cried with self pity whilst a friend sat and held my toes to warm them up.  It took about 3-4 weeks to get mobile. Even now though my ankle aches every morning when I wake up, every time I walk the dogs. High heels are a big no no. I have to strap my ankles up alot of the time. I'm terrified of it happening again. There is an operation that you can have in extreme cases, I think next time it happens I'm going to beg the Dr to let me have it.

Thinking of you, hoping you have a speedy recovery. Keep that ankle elevated....and keep those crutches so I can pinch them for next time ;)

Yeah as everyone says don't rush into anything.  I have weak ankles due to problems at birth and not walking until I was nearly 3.  Not much fun when you try running across a road and they give way on you for a couple of seconds, look a right idiot as I'm trying to get them going again :d

Take care and I don't envy you with the two children and the hairy dog!

Just thought i'd let you know that I had my follow up at the hospital today and they confiscated my crutches!!!!  :?  Still hobbling, and land awkwardly sometimes  :shock: , but i'm getting there. Miss walking my baby  :cry:  Have bought a sports support, and am going hiking boot shopping at the weekend (physio told me to avoid wellies like the plague), so hopefully we be walking the monster again next week  :D
