Hi there I am thinking of breeding from my red grizzle Border Terrier bitch if all goes well and all her tests come out right on hips and eyes so on...when she is 2 years old.  The thing is i am a novice i've been looking at the bloodlines she is from a very good pedigree with almost half of her family being show winners and i am willing to take on all the responsibility of breeding, unwanted pups after time and home checking and god forbid puppies dying at birth and after.  However what i want to know is how many generations before say inbreeding becomes a issue and how to pick the right stud dog?  I'm taking it that you stay away from one with the same lines?  Can you all give me lots of tips and advice i'd like to pick all your brains on the subject.    Also I live in the Staffordshire region and would be interested if an of you could tell me of local Border terrier studs and i could ask them for there pedigree and price so on.  Thanks for all your help?

If you r bitch comes from a reputable and knowledgeable breeer (it would be unlikely she would be of breeding quality if they were not) then they are the best people to guide and mentor you as they will have the information and expereince that you do not have as yet.

You should of course put in some study of your breed to be able to take and use advise wisely.

I would suggest joining your breed club and ask to buy back issues of the yearly publications which will be full of breeders adverts and photos of their dogs, pedigree, articles etc.

I would also suggest you at least attend shows, even if you don't watn to show your girl.  This wil lenable you to see potential studs, their existing offspring, and to develop an eye for what is a good dog.

You are idealy placed for both General Championship shows and Open shows as many are held at the Stffordshire County Showground.  Other popular venues are also not too far.

Hi,
You are on the right track so far.
You really need to go back to her breeder, or maby get in touch with a good BT breeder and have her assessed for breeding suitability, advice on lines and suitable stud for her.
Many breeders will be more than happy to help you gain the information you are looking for.
