Right I am having a moment here so bear with me. I was talking to one of my friends and said my girl didnt seem to be getting much fatter she is in the last week of pregnancy since first mating and she said her bitch didnt get any fatter and she only had one because the vet thought she had reabsorbed the rest. Dont get me wrong she is big but she doesnt seem to be getting any fatter. She is extremely fit her stomach is as tight as a drum and really hard. It is also her first litter. I have read the book of the bitch and cant see any time limit on when the reabsorb.
I think I am probably just panicking.

I think you are as well!!!
Don't panic she will be fine, she may well be holding them up in her ribs.
Bitch's tend not to reabsorb after 6-7 weeks, as that is when the bones are forming, if they lose a puppy after that time, they would be more likely to abort.
When she is laying quietly can you feel or see any movement? First time bitch's can hold their figures very well, you may well get a surprise.
My friends GWP whelped a week ago, I was with her during whelping and would have sworn that she was only having 5/6 at the most she went on to produce 9. Appearance can be very deceptive. :-)
No I cant see any movement but she feels rock solid. I dont think she has a large litter probably about 6 - 8 but I keep panicking. I never expected to be able to have any pups from her as she never bleeds when in season so this is a very special litter to me. If she only had one bitch that would satisfy me :)
There has definately been no blood loss or discharge.
I was so convinced that something was wrong I took her to the vets this pm. The vet has scanned her and said all is well although she has refused to tell me how many as she said that would only encourage my neurosis :) I think I was less concerned when I was having my own kids.

I didn't think my girl would have more than 6 but ended up producing 10 last week she was carrying some tucked in the ribs and all were a good size too. My vet wouldn't tell me numbers either but he got quite a shock himself when we told him our news.

My girl started reabsorbing some of her litter at 5 weeks, aborted the rest of 7 weeks..........but she got lots smaller overnight, so yes I think you are panicking!
My girls don't grow much in the last week either!

That makes me laugh, as it si all relative as I would consider a 6 or 8 as a large litter, even though historicxally my breed have had large litters, average is 6 or 7, but I have had a lot of fours.
In fact my last four litters have totalled 15 puppies! I have had some 7s and a litter of 9 and the least was a litter of 3 surviving of four born.

The combined number of pups born from my last two litters is 18. Regarding reabsorption, I had my girl scanned day 35 by mobile scanner who indicated 10+ pups. She went on to have seven pups so obviously some were reabsorbed.

It's very true that it's all relative! In dals, 8 is an average litter, with 10 or 12 being not unusual.
:)
Agreed 6 or 8 might be a large litter to some well to most but the smallest litter I have had is 12 with two lots of 13 and her mum is also one of 13 so to me that is a small litter. 8 would be ideal as she will be able to cope without me having to bottle feed and not being able to work over one of the busiest period of the year.
Her sister who was double her size had 9 on Tuesday.
I just feel happy now the vet has said they look okay there is obviously not so few she expects trouble so all I can do is calm down and wait. :) She did also say stop talking to everyone until afterwards as everyone knows a horror story as I am sure those of you have had to go into hospital before you had your children realise. :)
