hello champdogs is it a good thing to have ur dog yearly boosted.pls comment
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 02.03.05 18:50 UTC
There are many schools of thought; some people have their dogs boostered every year, some every two or three years, and some not at all. There seems to be no single 'right' answer.

There is scientific evidence that yearly boosters are not needed. If your vet uses Nobivac vaccines they only need be done every 3 years, tell your vet about them. Why don`t you join the board, its free :)

Leptospirosis needs doing every year as it is caught from rats and can be given to humans! The vaccination only lasts a year.

Leptospirosis dog vaccination is not completely effective due to a limited coverage in the vaccine for the numerous types of the organism. Infected dogs theoretically pose a risk of transmission to their owners through contact with their urine, although such direct transmission has been infrequently documented.

Depending on what you do with your dogs and where you go Leptospirosis is a very real danger to dogs as is the human version Weils disease. Because of the food I put down in the woods I have literally hundreds of rats around my pens and OK, so the vaccines may not be perfect but I'm not prepared to take the chance. Weils disease in humans it terrible!

my 6yo daschund i got 2weeks ago only had 1 nobivac booster last year and i was told shele be due 1 this year. so know i dont know wether to get here it now.if its not rearly needed!

Depends which one she had last year. The Nobivac schedule (after initial puppy jabs)  1st booster is full booster + lepto, 2nd booster is just parainfluenza + lepto, 3rd booster is as 2nd booster, and then these three boosters repeated in a three year cycle. So dogs would need some form of booster every year.

Print out & give to your vet to read Intervets instructions :)

i was wondering when i lived in london we had a well known canadian vet,and told me only to vacinate every 3 years.
in america i was told they only vacinate every 3 yrs is that right i have a new vet now since we moved and he say vacinate every year it is very confusing.

I suspect vets won't go for the 3 year vaccination as they loose money against annual boosters.
As an addition remember, if you should ever want to board your dog, Boarding Kennels will need to see proof of vaccination. that can take up to 2/3 weeks for full course if not previously vaccinated.

The insurance that Kennels may or may not have on animals in their care, generally have not got up to date with this 3 yr vaccination and may not accept claims depending on the insurance company, and I suspect that may well go on private pet insurance as well, so may well be worth checking out with the insurance company if your pet is covered as the wording my state something to the effect that annual boosters must be done.

We have in the past had to turn away bookings at short notice, when the owner is rushed into hospital or family crises occures, purely because the animal is not vaccinated. Not that I am saying you must or must not, that is up to the pet owner, it is just something worth bearing in mind.

Hi Bazza, so what happens if the intervet vax are being used? If insurances still insist on yearly vax then they are directly going against the manus advice.

I think it's a shame that people who would prefer not to vaccinate (after a lot of research and deliberation) have to compromise their beliefs in case they ever need to board their dogs.  I've often wondered why kennels won't accept some kind of clearance from a vet that the animal is in good health - after all even a vaccinated dog can go down with parvo, lepto etc.
To put a human parallel on it, it's like a nursery not taking a child that hasn't had its MMR jab (I'm assuming this doesn't happen ! :) )

Yes so do I joyce :(
The PATDOGS have been accpeting nosodes for a while now so why isn`t anybody taking more notice of them? They must use insurance & yet are able to still use h/pathy, it must be accepted by one of the insurance firms surely? They are going to into hospitals, care homes, schools etc all governed by local authorities etc.
Even if people want to vaccinate & they are using intervets vax I don`t see how local authorities, boarding kennels & insurance firms can object as they are being vaccinated according to the manus criteria.
