Hi justi,  If you type Jan Fennell into google, you will get her webpage which details the available products.  BTW, some people on here seem very anti Jan Fennell so expect some advice on saving yourself money!!

As Annie says, be prepared to take some of what the lady says with a pinch of salt! :)
- By Annie ns Date 02.03.05 11:21 UTC
Hi Jeangenie,  I don't think that was exactly what I said!!

Thankyou for your replies, will do that now, guess everyone is entitled to their opinion ;).  I will have to see how I get on lol

Hi Justi,
I dont think Jan Fennel has a video only books.
Is it for behaviour training, if so David Appleby has a good one which goes through different scenarios with dogs.
Sandie.

Which bits should be taken with a pinch of salt?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 02.03.05 12:51 UTC
The bits that are based on flawed science. If you do a [search] on this site and type in Jan Fennell as keywords, you'll find a lot of threads about her work.
:)

Hi Sandie,  According to her website, there is a video and dvd.
- By justi [gb] Date 02.03.05 13:33 UTC
Hi
I was just told her work was good and effective, my dog isn't too badly behaved (well except being an over excited young lab 18 months), but was told she had some good results with stopping dogs jumping on the kitchen sides, and knocking over visitors in their over enthusiastic but ever loving welcoming, which we suffer from lol.  Can you recommend a good dog training video, so far we have done, recall, sit stay, down stay, send away, and a contential and english finish, and have nearly stopped the pulling of the arm out of the socket on walks, she is doing well, well most of the time,  but has a long way to go lol.

I met a man with rotties at ringcraft who swore by her book.  Anyway she was doing a book signing at crufts and I got her book.  I found it to be very useful and have applied some of what she said to my own dogs and it has certainly made a difference.  Not everyone will agree and I dont agree with all that is said but then I dont agree with a lot of what other people say either.  Does anyone remember Barbara Woodhouse?  My dad tried to follow her training the woodhouse way with our dogs it used to be very entertaining.

O Yes I remember Barbara, some of her way's were so entertaining, some of her way's were damm right cruel, but youv'e got to give credit where credit's due, she bought dog training to the general public, where as before then it was just the dedicated few that trained thier dogs. Viv

After Barbara Woodhouse started her TV training our club got snowed under! I think, until that time most people never gave a thought to pet dog training and just accepted what the dog gave. Say what you like about her but by bringing "training to the masses" she did dogs a power of good!

I agree John, I might not agree with her methods now, but at the time they were the norm.  As you say at least people thought about training their dog.

We could do with another character like her now, showing the methods of today.  Many have tried but none has had the impact that she did.

I think that was it about her - she had oodles of personality!
and didn't give a fig if she came across as strange/eccentric or just plain mad :D

I really enjoyed her bookon Talking to Animals which had alot about training horses in the Argentine - she was a lot nicer to them than the gauchos who were by all accounts really harsh. And i remember going round doing the nose breathing to lots of ponies when i was younger. It worked!

I agreed with her dog training methods then, although now they horrify me ;)

She also got the message across to a lot of people how important (and easy) it was to keep dogs wormed, etc. People listened to her.

I met her once, at Crufts, and she showed me the correct way to use a check chain - on my neck! I can assure you that it didn't hurt, the way she did it, where it was the noise of the chain that was important, not the pressure. But she was skilled, and a lot of people aren't. She also demonstrated that dogs don't understand English, by training one to sit, stand and lie down with nonsensical commands such as 'cabbage', 'horse' and 'tree', proving that they merely associate sounds with actions, not the meaning as we understand it.

The bits that most people don't like is the don't touch your dog to make it sit stand etc as it invades your dogs personal space etc She has a little knowledge but a very good PR firm

She had a TV program that featured her "curing"a dog jumping up at guests using a lead & choker once these were removed the dog went back to jumping up.again. She also suggested feeding two dogs in sight of each other on leads to stop them fighting<sight>, she suggested to some one I know using cheese at treats even though the dog owner had told her the dog had a bad reaction to cheese

There are far better books & help from real dog people such as Sheila Bailey. John Rogerson & the Late John Fisher to name but three
