Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / best age to breed a flat coat
- By Guest [gb] Date 02.03.05 16:19 UTC
my flat coat bitch will be 24 months next month,  she has had very regular seasons from the age of 6 months, then every 6 months without fail.  her next season will be her fourth,  she is a good example of the breed,  hips 4/4, eyes clear and dna profiled,  ive seen a stud dog who i hope to use,  is being 24 months too young? she'll be 26 when they are born and 28 months when the pups leave her.  my vet says he sees no reason why not to as she's in perfect health but in other breeders views what do they think? the stud dog has also had all his checks.

Many breed clubs' codes of conducts say don't mate them before they're two years old, but I don't know about FCRs. There are plenty of people on here who have them who'll be able to say for definite.

There is no hurry to breed from her yet but if the timing is best this season rather than next or the one after then I would think she is the minimum age, but as this is a large breed and slow maturing I would wait another year.

This will give you a chance to see what the dogs other progeny are turning out like, and possibly some of the bitches relatives too, and also to find a back up stud you might like to use shoudl things not work out with this one. :D

I have mated a bitch two weeks before her second birthday, but with all my others they have been nearly 3 or nearly 4 years old.

The Flatcoated Retriever Society Code of Ethics says 2 1/2 for breeding.  I would have said that your bitch is a little young.  Remember they are very young "mentally" as well as immature physically.

another point to consider is that there are lots of Flatcoat litters expected at the moment and you do have to take on board that if you breed at the height of the season you may have them around for longer than 8 weeks.

That is of course unless your bitch is well known and you have a long list of prospective customers.

Do you show your bitch?  Or work her?  Is the Stud dog well known?  These are other considerations to take on board.
