So how many of you actually have it? Whether through AA or RAC, or another firm. Where do you keep the phone number, and policy number? I only ask because tonight I broke down coming home from ringcraft. I had a new battery fitted yesterday lunchtime and it died on me tonight. I had my mobile phine, but didn't have the number pre-programmed. No problem, I thought, the documents are in the car. NO THEY WEREN'T. I'd taken them out at the weekend to read something, and forgot to put them back  So there I am, sitting at the side of the dual carriageway thinking 2who do I know that can help?" My next door neighbour has a car transporter (he's a mechanic) but I didn't have his phone number on me. My house was empty as my daughter is away for a few days (well, it's been a fortnight so far ;) ) HEEEEEEEEEEEELP :) I phoned my daughter and she checked the phone book. I was sure he was ex-directory, but no, thankfully he wasn't :D He came out and transported us home. What a nice man :D . My car is now sitting outside my house, on a transporter, and I haven't got a clue what's wrong, or how I'm going to get to work tomorrow (oh dear, what a shame ;) ) Think I'd better put the number of the recovery company in my phone, as well as my neighbour's :D

Thanks
Char

Linda!!!!
We were with the AA but recently changed to the RAC as the AA were becoming too expensive for what we have. For our car, caravan and transit van for Eric and I it was nearly £300 a  year as they charged the full price for the van as it is a commercial vehicle. The RAC charged £10 extra for the van making it just over £100 so they won but we alway keep our membership card in the drivers visor pocket along with my licence and other important things that I would lose otherwise!!!!

We've been with the RAC for more than 20 years! How time flies! We each have a card in our wallets (the Boy's just been added to our cover for only £25) and one that lives in the 'main' car.

We have joint membership with the AA,only used them once though in 7yrs,for an immobiliser problem. We keep my card in the car and hubby has his in his wallet! the phone number is written on the back of the tax display disc and programmed into the mobile phones! You should provide them with another form of ID if you call them, but I rarely have that with me when I walk the dog as I leave most valuables at home including purse and bag  suppose I could carry my gym card with piccy in the car,it's rarely used at the gym :D :D

well if you with the AA,make sure your insurance will pick you up if you crash, because the AA DONT anymore, only if you breakdown or they will but will charge you.
also then make sure the insurance wont just pay for you to get to the nearest garage, thats no fun if you are coming home from a dog show 300 miles away!!!

the rac will take you home!!!! :)

- By michelled [gb] Date 02.03.05 16:12 UTC
no they wont!!! well they  will but they will charge you.
last april it was
£x amount to pick you up (cant remeber but £25/£40???)which includes the first 15 miles, after that they charge £1.50 per mile plus vat!!!!!!!!! i was 300 miles away from home,by yourself with a car full of dogs on a sunday evening, with very little money on me,having just had a crash & written off my car on the mway!

youd be fine though if you broke down!!!!

I used to be with AA, but changed to Direct Line (think it's Green Flag) and can't fault them.  I'd never go back to AA now.

Also some companies will not take 'livestock' - and they include dogs........ :(

I've decided to get a new car. This one, though it's done me well, is now starting to cost me. Don't know whether to get a little car for a year, and save up for a bigger, newer model, or just get a big car again, but not as new. I tend to get a lift to most shows just now, but can't rely on it all the time. Just can't make up my mind. Think I'll have a look around and see first. That's if my car ever gets back on the road ;)

Neighbour has just arrived home, early for once, so he must want me out of his hair :D (what little he has  ) As I said before, what a nice man :D He has collected me 3 times late at night when most people are thinking about bedtime :) If I had a better half he'd be worried about us :D

I'm with Britannia Rescue & touch wood haven't needed them for a long time but you register the car with them so need no ID etc when you call them & when  they get to you They also send a "how did we do"questionaire after a recovery or call out & they do recover after accidents(sadly I had to use this six years ago.)They have to get to you within an hour & single women are a priority. They actually top all the consumer polls (when they are included :)) like the Consumer Association ones

I also am with Brittannia Rescue for one very good reason, they employ local garages as agents right across the country thereby giving a faster response as they know the area and your not paying in membership fees for fleets of vans running around the country.
I don't know if it is still the case but AA and the RAC if they find you have a pet in the car, can refuse to recover you, or if they do the pet has to stay in the broken down vehicle. I was involved in an accident 2 yrs ago (not my fault, but took 18 months to get other side to admit liability) the Britannia rescue  had not only turned up but pulled my car out of the ditch and had it piggy backed on the transporter ,about to take me home as the AA turned up in a small van totally useless for recovery. That was at least half an hour after my recovery people came, then the AA would have had to call out a recovery truck after that, so heavens alone knows how long the recovery took ( his car was a rightoff).

My sons are also on my Britannia Rescue membership and on occasions having older cars have needed assistance and each time without fail the service has been first class.
Needless to say I cannot recommend Britannia Resue enough not only for their fast recovery service, but also the outstanding effort not only getting the vehicle to a repair garage but also in making sure everyone involved gets to their destination

Brittannia Rescue sounds like it operates in the same way as Direct Line Rescue which I have, I cannot fault them, and I have needed them several times in the last few months, both for my own car and my sons.

The other thing about Britannia Rescue is that it is owned by the CSMA & not a commerical company just out to make money. It's open to non CSMA members but you pay slightly more. Anyone who has ever been a civl servant or in the post office can join the CSMA. I think there are other qualifiying employers

I think the quickest recovery must have been when my Dad's car broke down on his way home & he was outside a petrol station/garage. He was giving the operator the location & details of the car & the operator asked there was someone there from the garage & when he said yes the operator said pass the phone to them because they are our agents in your location :D my dad was on the way home within 10 minutes of making the call with a new fan belt fitted He was well impressed :D
