what do you think is the best thing to take pick of the litter or a stud fee?
my stud dog is a staffie bull terrior and stud fees are quite low around £150 - £200 but pups sell for £500 so I thought pick of litter would be the best thing and then I can sell the puppy and get more money but what happen if I mate my dog and ask for a stud fee and then the  bitch doesnt take?  would i have to give them their money back?

It depends what you agree in the stud contract. You can have just about any terms you like, within reason.

What usually happens is if the bitch doesnt take the owners get to bring her (not another of their bitches) back for a free stud next season or the one after that.

A stud fee is usually a fee payed for the dog to mate the bitch not for the puppies which may not be born afterwards, unlike horses were it is quite common for no foal no fee agreements to be made

You can ask for a puppy from every mating but the bitches own might not want to do that & they might well use another dog

I speak from my experiences and i have always been given a contract stating that if no pups result from the mating i will be given a free stud next season, or one after that, for that bitch. I pay my fee, i leave, i keep them posted.

It depends on the stud contract you draw up.

I signed one stud contract that said "Should pick of the litter be taken as payment a deposit of £200 will be paid at time of mating to be returned on collection of said puppy".

Personally I would never agree to any contract with your reasons for wanting the puppy as I would have no way of knowing where this puppy went.  I would also have the expense of bringing the puppy up so it would be a very expensive stud fee.

If you are not happy with what you are getting for your stud fee then charge more in the first place. 

When I offer my dog at stud the same as most people I offer a free mating next time.  If it didnt take then although I wouldnt be obliged to I would refund the fee.

On the rare occasions that I let my dog out at Stud I never consider the "amount of money I might make".

However in answer to the question.  We charge a "service fee" of £50.00.  that is non refundable and is for the actual mating itself.  The Stud fee is payable after the puppies have been born.  If there are two or less puppies in the litter then I half the stud fee.

Another method is to charge a service fee and then so much per puppy born.  This is done in Scandinavia and very popular.

If you are charging a stud fee up front then it is etiquette to over a free return if the bitch does not take.

HOWEVER - what EVER method you use should be agreed with the owner of the bitch (IN writing) before the mating takes place.  This way there are no ramifications afterwards.

Here we go again, someone wanting to stud their dog yet thinking about claiming a pup because its worth more money.

Unless you have a pet shop  licence isn`t it against the law to sell a puppy you get in leiu of a stud fee? Personally I would never consider this as an option and would never agree to it no matter how much I wanted to use a particular stud dog, you would have no say in where your puppy ended up and if money was the prime consideration I doubt much care would be taken in placing the puppy.

does it dignify a serious answer? why would ANY decent breeder do such a thing?

My Great Dane breeder friend sometimes accepts a puppy in lieu of the stud fee IF she wants a puppy for herself & never ever to sell on. It means she can keep her lines going without all the work of a litter & as she cares for her disabled sister in law now time is at a premium & one Dane puppy is a lot easier to raise than 14 !
