my chocolate lab was neutered yesterday and he was a bit whiney and paced a lot last night he ate scrambled egg and a bit of boiled chicken last night and was fine he slept through the night and seemed a lot brighter this morning. i gave him his normal breakfast and then left him while i took the kids to school. about half an hour after i got back i gave him a dog biscuit as he seemed a bit sad and then about 2 hours after he had a load of diarrhea in the garden which is like water and then he did two massive piles of sick which looked like all his breakfast. it had been 3 hours since his breakfast. he is very subdued and tired. should i panic or just see how he goes. he is drinking.

Hi Katyb,
Sorry to hear about your lad not being well after being neutered. It may just be the after effects of the anaestetic because my dog howled the night after his op when he was neutered. I used to have a german shepherd though and 3 weeks after being neutered he was very lethargic and didn't want to walk and looked very sorry for himself. I took him to the vet and it was the vets assistant who just said that he is probably brewing for some diarrhoea, which I thought was strange because when a dog has diarrhoea normally it is not ill with it. He also had a high temperature. Next day I noticed his scrotum was really swollen and phoned the vet and he told us to take him in immediately because the surgery had just opened for the evening surgery. We saw the main vet and he said 'Why have you not brought him in before now' so I told him that we had been the day before and seen his assistant vet and told him what he had said. I had also asked the assistant if could be something to do with his castration 3 weeks before and he said 'I shouldn't think so' and never ever bothered to check. It turned out that the poor dog had a blood clot in his scrotum and had to be treated with injections and tablets for the next 5 or 6 days.
Please let us know how your dog goes on at the vets.

Hi katyb,
Try not to worry too much, I know it is hard when your dog is concerned (I worry more over the dog than the kids) but I'm sure that your vet will sort him out when you take him. Is his scrotum swollen at all? Perhaps he has just got a bit of infection and the vet will put him on some antibiotics.

ok well after my post on here max took a sudden dive for the worse as his sac did swell quite rapidly in a short space of time so i took him straight up the vet and they think he has had a small bleed in his sac. he had a slight temperature and was still being sick. they gave him an antibiotic , an anti inflammatory and an anti sickness injections and we have tablets to give him some antibiotic and anti inflammatory. he was really lethargic in the vets but since then he has perked up a bit. he hasnt been sick again thanx to the jab. he is still quite tired but i suppose sleep is the best thing for him. he is going back to the vet tommorrow for another check. hopefully we are over the worst of it.

Hi katyb,
Sounds like he had something similar to our dog then doesn't it. He will be fine once the medication gets working. Glad he is okay.

Hi Katyb,
Sorry to hear about Max - he must have been feeling pretty miserable and you no doubt were feeling worried sick :( At least he had a good Mum keeping a careful eye on him and so you knew a.s.a.p. that things weren't right and were able to get him treated quickly.
It's probably a good thing he is sleeping - hope you can get some too. Will keep everything crossed that all goes well when he is checked over again tomorrow. Please keep us posted.
Best wishes, Teri :)

Hi Katyb,
Glad you were able to get Max to the vet so quickly, and hope he's a lot better now. A lot of healing gets done while sleeping so good that he's doing so. Hoping for better news today:-)
Lots of Reiki.
