Topic Dog Boards / General / LURCHER- ADVICE NEEDED- LETTING OFF LEAD

Have just adopted a lovely rescue lurcher, but with no practical experience of lurchers, am wondering at what stage (if ever), we could let him off his lead.  Plan on initially trying on a beach end March.  By then, would have had him few weeks and there should be no cats around for him to chase!!

its a tricky situation wen deciding to let any dog off  a lead specially one that loves to run such as a lurcher.
i think first what you need to do is teach him the stay and come command and aslo the recall the dog must come to you when he/she is called this is vital in training and when considering letting off the lead.
once you dog learns that and its best to let him off in enclosed area where he cant run off then then lethim off the lead let himrun round and then call him if he does this then all is well but if he doesnt itsnot a good idea to let the dog off the lead incase he runs off or attakcs another dog always keep treats with you and make sure the first time you have an eye on him once he has learnedto come when you ask then he will be fine

I wouldn't let a dog off the lead for the first time in a strange place. If you let him off somewhere near home, if he does a runner, at least he has a chance of coming home. But as Kerrie has said, I would wait for quite a while until you have done some basic training :)

Try a lunge line which you can buy from any saddlery shop, this will let him run without losing him and to see if he comes back or not!

I think when you let ANY dog off lead rather depends on two things.  The relationship you have with the dog and the level of training it has reached.

In the past I have rescued a young adult greyhound and let her off lead, in a safe area, close to where I lived just 2 weeks after bringing her home.  I never had a problem with letting that dog off lead in any circumstances.  However, my daughter rescued a terrier x and he was a little s*d off lead - he came back when he wanted and we'd had him since he was 5 weeks old!

I'd be very careful about letting your dog run on a long line though - usually when 'free' they run like the wind in a short but very fast bursts.  I dread to think what damage might be done to your dog's neck when it hit the end of a long line!

I think the key is to make sure that it is well away from roads etc. Dont wish to alarm you but a friend lost her lurcher of 15 years recently and right up to a few weeks befoer he died he was chasing deer, even though he could hardly walk. It is a deep ingraned thing and not easy to train out!
