Many children cry at night when they're away from home for the first time, so it's very understandable. Did you try sleeping in the same room as him? If you don't want him upstairs you could sleep on cushions on the kitchen floor beside his bed - I've done it myself!

As you have just found out, no 2 dogs are the same ;)

how long have you had Harley? It takes a while for them to adjust. Harley is probably missing his mum, litter mates and familiar enviroment. Harley is still a baby and feeling very insecure in an unfamiliar enviroment. I can sympathise with you as I have got a 9 week old pup, she settled after 3/4 nights but is still capable of kicking up a fuss if she wakes up and finds herself in the dark and all alone. But she has a crate and very quickly came to associate this with comfort, security and sleep time ;)

The best thing that you can do is give reassurance before settling and keep up with the radio and jumper, whatever you do, don't go back to Harley once you've settled him as he will very quickly learn that he can do this and get your attention, then you will be making a rod for your own back  I know, I've done it in the past :P It will improve, given time :)

Edited to say: Unless you don't like leaving him on his own, in which case, do as JG has suggested. :)

Has he ever been crated before? Did you bring a 'security blanket', smelling of his mum and the rest of litter, when you took him away?

he had been in a puppy pen

Then if he's warm, fed, and doesn't need to wee or poo, I imagine you'll just have to ride it out. Most puppies seem to come to accept their new home in about a week. It's very tiring for owners (and neighbours!) though.

I am not meaning to sound harsh here - I am as soft as melted icecream really. ;)

Make sure he is not hungry, is warm doesn;t need a poo or wee right away and put him in the room where he is to sleep (his forever sleeping place preferably) and if this is in a cage/crate whatever then make sure its not in draughts or direct heat - right up against a radiator or something. Then do what you would do ie either leave a nightlight on or not and leave him. No point giving in - you make a rod for your own back - a couple of nights and he will be fine. Leave him with a comfort blacnket like a olds tshirt or yours and or a soft cuddly toy/bear and he will be fine. They quickly get the gist you are coming back and remember he will never have known what its like to be alone up until now.

I always leave new pups with the older lass for their first week. I pop their crates up next to each other, pop in a kong for pup, bone for older lass and leave them to it. Having another dog near by, like they had with mum and others, seems to settle them for me and then as they get older they sleep together (post toilet training). Plus, the old girl love getting to play mummy!
