Not sure if my girl is in pup or not yet as she would only be 3 weeks.

Can I have your views on taking her to exemption shows?

I was told not to as she could pick up somthing?!

She enjoys going to shows & I would not travel miles to a champ show or anything unless she was not expecting, but this is a little fundraising show we go to every year.

She goes for walks & ringcraft where other dogs are so I dont see a problem with this but would like your views please as I would not like to endanger her or any possable pups in any way!

She is a staffie by the way

Thankyou in advance

Hi tenno staffs,

Think this is likely to be a split decision based on personal opinions and/or experiences ;)  I didn't take my girl to any doggy events (including training) when she was in whelp as I've known two people who have lost litters and are unsure whether attending shows had anything to do with it.  So for me I decided it wasn't worth the risk - but I've no cast iron proof (nor have my friends) that it's necessarily dangerous to do so.

If it were me, I'd simply send a cheque to the fundraisers of the show to continue my support and then inundate them next year with the puppies too if possible :P

Good luck with your little lady anyway whatever your decision.

Regards,
Teri :)

Thankyou - I may give it a miss to be on the safe side then - if anything happened I would never forgive myself :-(

last time she was mated I went on holiday for 10 days when she was just over 4 weeks (confirmed by a scan) pregnant.

I had my neice staying in my house to house sit, I had her scaned again a few weeks later as there was no sign of pregnancy & she had reabsorbed them :-(

I since found out she had a load of friends around & they played with her all day in the garden in the summer (& it was hot) so I have allways blamed myself for leaving her. (I also got a £300 phone bill for the 10 days but thats another story)

I have learnt this time though - Me & the kids are going on holiday & hubby is staying with her - lol - hopefully he will be more resonsible!

Thanx again for the advice

I admit that I still take my training etc. for the first 5 weeks but I don't take them to shows etc.  I once took one to a working test when she was just 5 weeks, she did brilliantly but to be truthful it depends upon the dog.  Don't forget that she may become quite protective too so you wouldn't want to stress her in any way.

My friend let me train her WSD and CKCS in agility until they were 4/5 weeks pregnant - both had litters of 6 and 5 respectively!

I carry on as normal when my girls are pregnant and haven't had a problem.  Infection is everywhere!  I protect my girls and my home as best I can, have very little illness and rarely need a Vet.
I once took Betty to Bath Championship Show 6 weeks in whelp.  It was her first litter and she wasn't large but was in full bloom.  She won BOB!  I always said that the pups were born with a ticket because they were there!

With you on this Val :) Took my in 4+half wk in whelp girl & she took rcc, judge said she would have got cc but was overweight, didn`t matter tho it was her daughter took the cc ;) :D
On a more serious side, Val is absolutely correct, viruses, bacteria, infection are everywhere, not just the floor that you can wash & just because you don`t see them doesn`t mean they`re not there!
I`ve done it both ways & had more problems staying isolated that now I`d never do it again & carrying on as normal(within reason of course!) is the best way for me & my dogs & like Val my lot are rarely need the vet anymore :) There again, I know a lot more how immune systems & viruses etc work now & treat them both accordingly :)

I should thank you for your post Christine!!  The way that I've worded it could sound as though I don't consider my girls' health and well being as important!!  Thankfully, you 'know' me better than that!! ;)

After years of learning, I have worked hard to keep my dogs fit and healthy with good immune systems to cope with living.  I have confidence in what I do to keep them (and me!) healthy.  The only times that I've taken them to Vets, the results have not been good. :(  But for those who don't feel the same, then they must do what they feel is best for their dogs and be advised by their Vet.
Maybe I shouldn't have posted "carry on as normal" just because that's what I do?

Sounded just about right to me Val :D
Thing is I just feel sometimes that peolpe don`t understand the nature of viruses & bacteria & the importance of the immune system to keep them at bay, also what the immune system needs to keep & mantain it healthy. I understand tho if people don`t want to or for some reason can`t learn, the need to rely on their vet, but for me I quite enjoy :) Like evryone says on here, what suits one, won`t suit another, but its normal for us ;) :D

According to the book of the bitch a litter is most vulnerable to infection at 3 to 5 1/2 weeks in whelp, as until then they are floating and impervious to outsdie influence, but after that they are fed by placenta and things can go wrong develpomentally at this stage due to viral or other contaminants.

So I would never take a bitch to a doggy place after 3 weeks after mating.

I took Tigger to Manchester but she was only 2 weeks and as she didnt have normal seasons I was not expecting it to take.  I would not normally have bothered but the judge had given her a first previously and she is on two tickets so I thought I would take the chance.  Then she threw her :) Such is life.
