Should a shar pei pup have an owner's manual. And what is it.

Had to think about this one :P  Personally I think ALL puppies should come with an owner's manual - but as far as I know they don't!

Perhaps you mean a book about the breed (either it's history/origins, care etc)?  I'm sure if you were to contact the breed club they would be able to provide you with publications specific to the breed - I know our clubs carry a number of different books covering all aspects of the breed (not a Shar Pei Club unfortunately)

Now I'm not so sure what you mean by "something missing from his kc"   So I'm going to start again :P   I assumed you were looking for a manual, ie book, on more about Shar Peis?  In which case, phew, I gave the right info!

But maybe you think the KC registration documents are the "owner's manual"?  In which case scrub the above and start again

The KC registration papers will detail your pup's name, sire and dam, the breeders info and have a section which you fill in and return to the Kennel Club transferring the puppy into your own name.   Separately to that you will have a pedigree - which is a detailed record of the preceding generations of your puppy (usually 3, 4 or 5 generations back starting with sire and dam) - if your puppy was advertised, sold to you as KC registered, then THE important part is the KC registration form.

If I've picked you up wrong forgive me - just back in from a night on the town :D so perhaps not as clear headed as usual (yeah, right)

         Yes, I have the papers for the pup and the bit that I have to send off. Before I got my Shar pei pup I read a lot on the breed. May be it was an over load of too much info,        Can you recomend a good book?
          He has settled down well, apart from the crying in a morning as soon as the first bird sings. Got them traning pads for the floor; they really work he used them the same day. everybody loves him. Thanks for taking the time to write.

Glad everything seems to be going OK :)  Re recommending good books, I've heard lots of good things said about Gwen Bailey's "The Perfect Puppy" - but I confess I haven't read it personally :P   I also have a couple of excellent books by John Rogerson, one is specifically about kids and pups, but am darned if I can remember where they are at present :rolleyes:

Good luck with your pup  :-)  I've got a 3 year old shar pei (resuced at 14 months) and the best advice I can give you is to socialise socialse socialise!! Shar peis are renowned for being very aloof, especially with strangers so if you nip this in the bud while he's still a puppy you'll hopefully have a very well adapted dog! They're also extremely independent, so again you need to lay the ground rules down to him from the start (i.e come means come now, not when you're ready! :rolleyes: )

Absolutely any question you may have remotely canine will happily be answered on here. As for books, the Gwen Bailey one is brilliant. I have a 'shar pei' book as well, but it's all very general and vaugue and wouldn't have bought it myself (it came with Dylan).  Enroll him in a puppy class and you'll soon be well on your way to having a happy obedient pup. Good luck, I wish I had known Dylan as a pup and seen him with all his wrinkles. What's your pup's name and color?
