My daughter has been offered an English Springer Spaniel, with this not being my breed I dont know what health tests etc this breed should have, went to see her last night and discovered a very cowed year old puppy that is tied up in the present owners kitchen practically 24/7, not allowed access to any other parts of the house, luckily I had some titbits with me and just sat and spoke quietly to her and she started taking them from me, very gently,  she has black head with white, and mostly white body with specks of black, is this called blue roan? trying to find out what breeder she came from will see paperwork tonight, but dont know any  reputable breeders in scotland, or who puppy farms can anyone help, i.e puppy farms please pm me thanks in advance. glasgow/ayrshire area

Springers can be prone to HD and OCD, but these tend to be brought on more by over excercise, which it doesn't sound as if this poor little girl has had :(  They may also have inherited eye defects of the retina, but normally cope quite well.  It really sounds as if she should be got out of there and the ESS as a breed has many active rescue groups who would be more than happy to help this owner if your daughter can't - she really deserves better than that.  I hope your daughter understands the implications of taking on a dog who may not have been well socialised.

Thanks for the replies, we went and got the dog yesterday and she spent the afternoon with me and my dogs, she is really hyper, which is to be expected, but, did get on well with mine, she is also in season. I was not looking to get her from a puppy farm, why I was asking, was, in case, originally thats where she came from!!! as I dont know the pf's in my area for this breed, I know them for my own breed.  My daughter has had a dog before, and if she will be working extra hours the dog will be here with me and mine, I have told her where the local ringcraft classes are, so once her season is finished she will be going there.  Would a halti, or harness be better for her as she really pulls on the lead, just wanting to run all the time, poor mite, but she is lovely and is docked, I am going to read up on the breed standard for her and get in touch with the trainer at the ringcraft classes. There is also a dog show beside my daughter tomorrow, so told her to go and look at the springers being shown.  We have not got her papers yet as the owner is moving house shortly and they are packed away, but my daughter works beside her, so this should not be a problem.  She is a lovely friendly dog, and her tail did not stop wagging the whole time she was here, think she thought she was in heaven being allowed to run about with the other dogs and in and out of the house and not getting checked all the time. We know the training will take time, ive told my daughter to start as if she was a 8wk old puppy and take is easy with her, be kind, but firm.
