I was told by a friend that removing the dewclaws is best when the pups are newborn.  How do you go about this process?

Get the vet to do it for you when the pups are three days old.

What breed is it?  We only remove hind ones, although we've never had any, in our breed. Our breed use thier front ones to manouevre etc. so we don't do it.

You will have to find out if your vet does it.  Mine will do it but it has to be done on day 2 or 3 at the latest.

My vet says they have to be done before the puppies are 3 days old.

You can get them done later under general anesthetic (sp?)

I had my long hared yorkie x done? a few yrs ago as the kept getting caught in her fur & I was worried they would hurt her.

Only took a few mins & no probs after.

Yes, but you have to take into account that (1) there is always a risk with gen. anaesthetic and (2) its very expensive - I know of one case where the op cost £100 to remove one dew claw!

True Fillis,

Not only that but importantly is an exceptionally painful procedure for the dog :(   I've had to have a dog's dew claws removed because of injury and my poor boy went through a miserable time for at least a couple of weeks post-op.

Gosh - did not know it was that much!  My vet took them off at the same time as spaying & only charged slightly more.

Good point about the genral though, her dew claws kept getting tangled in her hair & she was allways licking & nibbling them & making them sore, the vet suggested taking them off

is it advisable to have staffy pups dewclaws removed and what is the usual price per pup?

Staffies dew claws are not removed as a rule, but I know somone who has had a couple of pups with back dew claws & has had them removed.
