I took my gsd girl to be mated following 3 pre-mate tests (she has also had all relevant tests carried out).  The tests showed that she was ready and she was definitely willing to stand.  The problem we had was that the stud dog who has had all his tests carried out and who is only 1 year wasn't that interested.  He tried to mount a couple of times but his heart wasn't into it.  The stud dog owner had never come across this before as other dogs they have are sex mad so could it be due to him being a maiden?? I'm going back tormorrow for another try just time is pushing now and I never thought that he wouldn't be able to carry out the job and I don't have another dog lined up or local that I would use - Please help, is there nothing the stud dog owner can do to get him on the mood so to say??

The only time I had problems with my boy was when the bitch came on the wrong day and he wasnt really interest although did vaguely go through the motions.  The bitches owner bought her back two days later and he was a dog obsessed.  That was his first time.  Must be absolute nightmare for you though.

I agree with the previous post, we took our girl to be mated and the stud dog owner said Yep she is spot on, as it isn't the first time her dog has had a sniff at a bitch, then went and sat by the door waiting to get in as he deemed the bitch unready, however the same bitch was brought back two days later, the bitch was mated and they tied for 25 mins.

You could try giving him something to stand on to increase his height and confidence.

What exactly was the result of thr premate test?  if it was just that ovulation was just starting or about t6o occur then she may well not be ready as far as the dog is concerned.

The eggs are ovulated (usually over a day or two) in an immature styage of developement and cannot be fertilised for a further two days, after which they wil remain viable for a further two days.

If you took her on or the day after ovulation she will stil be OK for another 3 or 4 days, and some males prefer to mate bitches that are really ripe.

Unfortunately with maiden dogs and bitches it isn't unusaual for the first time to not go as planned.  Sadly some lovely dogs never get the idea due to being put off by a bitch or owner for being a pain at some time and loose confidence.

Dont want to be a wet blanket, but I know several dogs who need to be talked into interest in each and every mating!  And, sadly one or two who never get the idea at all.  It is very hard to give advise on how to  help, as it is largley experience and reading each individual situation.  A lot seems to depend on breed,  a lot of dogs from quieter breeds seem less willing in the mating line.
bye
