Hi there just wondering if anyone has had a puppy hernia corrected and what age it was done we have a puppy with quite a pronounced hernia (mother father and all other litter mates do not have one) it doesn't cause her any problems but it is unsightly and I want to have it corrected before we let her go, I have a lady who wants her and is waiting for me to find out how old she will have to be before she has it put right.

My vet is away for 2 weeks and the locum would rather I discussed it with her when she gets back as he doesn'y know what her policy is on the matter and her condition is not life threatening, so any help would be appreciated.

We had a pup with a hernia the size of a very small grape. my vet recommended leave well alone as it may reduce itself. If not  and it became a problem it could be operated on about 6 months of age. However, pup left us at 8 weeks and within a few days of leaving  the hole began to tighten around the hernia and restricting blood supply so pup had the operations just over 8 weeks old. He was absolutely fine but obviuosly anaesthetic carries risks. If its not a problem I would wait till pup older but monitor carefully for changes. I also paid the cost of the op as it was a problem I was  aware of  and did not think I should expect new owner to pay.

Our dog had an hernia when we got him (although we didn't notice until we got him home) but he was insured for birth defects under the kennels for 6 months so they said that they would stand the cost but their vet (who had a separate practice a few miles away) had to do the operation.
We had to take him back to the kennels when the vet was doing his rounds and he said yes he thought the hernia needed operating on and that the would do it the week after (I think our dog was only about 4 months old at this point)  He had it done and he was fine when we picked him up although he was a bit unsettled for a few nights afterwards.
