Hello everyone, I'm new on here, met a lady walking 2 black labs who told me about the forum. Aren't dog folk lovely? :0)
Anyway the love of my life (canine dept.) is Petra, she is a 7 year old black Afghan with fabulous eyebrows, she sings and talks and sits on my knee, is very hard to feed 'cos she's fussy. would love to be able to run free of her lead but is likely to be back in Afghanistan before I catch her, so she dislocates my shoulder on an extendable lead instead! unless she's in an enclosed space.
We all love her dearly and would love to hear about other people's Afghan Hounds. My username reflects my silly girl :0)

I have Belgian Shepherds, Tervuerens, x 3

bonkers! (them - not me :D )
Actually they have a lot in common with many sight hounds but perhaps a marginally better recall :P

Hi and welcome to champdogs :)
I grew up with Afghans, Pancho a chocolate/blackish colour (even the judges couldnt tell what colour he was :D :D , Zorro was a self masked cream and soooo laid back but a real ladies man, he would always give the girly dogs lots of little nibbles round their ears ;) then there was Khan, he was a black masked gold and a real live wire he barked at everything and had many a fight with other dogs, he wasnt too good with strangers either :( we loved him to bits though. None of ours were good off the lead but we used to take them to the common where it was safe for them to run and when they were tired they would stop running and let us catch them - but would never come to us. We also used to race ours which was great fun and Khan actually represented the south one year :)
I now have two Irish Setters, I wanted a dog who would come back when off the lead :)

Welcome aboard :)
Just a point to make - when you let her off on her extending lead I hope she's wearing a harness and not a flat collar - if the force makes your shouldar hurt - just think what it's doing to her neck....... (don't mean to be nasty - but a lot of people don't think about it - I didn't until it was pointed out to me :( )
the harness is a good point, she wears a flat collar and no-one in the Afghan hound society who I consulted several years ago mentioned that either, I've often worried about her throat/neck, I will see if I can get one to fit her, Thanks for that :0) What dogs do you have digger? I'm guessing terrier types ;0) (reference to digging)
Are there pictures on this site? I don't know what either of your dogs look like Teri!
Afghan's have such great personalities it makes me smile everyone I know who has one has a diferent tale to tell. I thought about taking her racing, I think she would enjoy it but was worried she would disrupt proceedings as she is the dumbest dog I've ever met!!!
just looked them up on google, very hairy they look gorgeous, do they do agility stuff?

The whole idea of Afghan racing is to make a fool of yourself :) Afghans arent like Greyhounds, you fight to get them in the traps then when the traps open, only one comes out because the rest have some how managed to turn themselves around so they are facing the wrong way. Quite often they get half way round the track and decide to turn around and go back the way they came  At the end you see all the owners spread accross the track ready to catch their furry friends because the ones who dont attack the electric hare are usually trying to get through the fence to freedom :D :D :D
Definitely worth a day out :)
well if that's the case then I will definitely give it a go! I thought it was serious...silly of me, where would they find Afghans to take running fast seriously!! How do I find out where to go etc?

I assume you would check with your areas Afghan Club to see when/where they hold racing events. Ours used to be in Reading I think on the first Sunday of the month, although I dont think they do it there anymore. My parents are looking to see where a local one is to us as they want to take their lurcher along. Sometimes they advertise in the Dog world under breed notes when there is next going to be racing but it always seems to be up North, maybe check the net on your regions breed club. Good luck :)

Agility

after a fashion :P
Seriously, they are a great breed for agility but mine do more than enough running rings round me ;) I've been taking the puppy to baby agility - no jumps or anything, she's just 9 months, but she loves the weaves and the tunnels. Thing is there should be an element of control to that but haven't figured out where the brakes hide on a Tervueren yet....
ps. Belgian Shepherds are a breed which comes in four different varieties. The Tervs (mine) are long haired fawn, red or grey with black mask and overlay, then there are short coated (Malinois) rough coated (Laekenois) and the other more popular variety is long haired, all black (Groenendael).
But - Tervuerens are THE Belgian Shepherd :D
regards, Teri
Is the puppy one you've bred yourself?

Hi again Jacqui,
Yes, the little dear is from our first litter - we waited 14 years to do it and 9 (yikes, almost 10!!!) months later we are still at the "never again"`stage :D
Hurrrray, my door bell is going - could be the repair man :P
Gotta go. Teri :)

Hi Jacqui
I am currently owned by two Afghans, Ebony 10 years and Jenna 8 years. Ebony is black/blue and Jenna is a gold brindle. I have also owned Pasha (my first Affie) who was white, Khym a b/m red, Cochise also b/m red, Muffin creamy white, son of Pasha, Shala black/tan, Jade shaded masked gold and her daughter Sox a shaded masked cream. At one time I used to let four off lead together in the local park but had to have at least two hours spare in order to catch them!
I have taken all mine racing although Pasha and Sox thought that idea was way below their status in life! Unfortunately Jenna did not like racing and headed for home first time out so never again and Ebony had to be retired due to a back operation.
I currently race a Dobermann at Hinkley which will not have a meeting this year until April as the organiser has to go into hospital. People come from all parts of the country so may be you could try and have a go sometime.
