I've just called my vet to book Callia in for her jabs in 2 weeks and they quoted me £55.00!!

Is this the norm in the South East? when Murf was done 2 yrs ago it was £30.00. It's not the money, but the principle. I'm fed up with being ripped off by vets, they have made a fortune out of me over the years and I wouldn't mind so much if they were vets that I could like and trust! Oh and the "new puppy" check over is another £15.00. My old vet used to do this for free.

Any one in the East Kent (Ashford, Folkestone) area that could recommend their vet to me? I've looked in the Yellow Pages but you just don't know until you try them do you? As I say, it's not the cost, being the owner of now 3 dogs I know what I'm in for and accept it. But when Murf has his jabs 2 yrs ago, the vet took 5 attempts to put the needle in and it resulted in chronic pain (huge abcess on the throat for 5 months)   and vaccine damage that took a lot of time and money to cure. I changed to another vets and they are just as bad, they even tried to talk me into getting his "double dew claws" (breed trait) amputated, I told them that this would result in him being partially lame and that they were meant to be like that but they wouldn't back down on their ignorance, so we agreed to disagree. I know that I will have the same converstion regarding Callia!!

It seems to vary hugely from vet to vet for some reason.

My vet takes £13 per vaccine ( so for puppies course it is £26) . I was there getting a puppy their second vaccine at the weekend and picked up 5 drontal tablets for worming also for my adults he took £20 in total.

Murfs due his booster next month and I'm still in 2 minds whether to go ahead with it or not (for entirely different reasons) :)

H/P - with the bad experience Murf had I can understand your reluctance to take the risk with another booster.  Personally I would think that if he had a bad reaction last time the chances are quite high that it will happen again.
I firmly believe that once the immune system is shown what to do (by the puppy vacs) it continues to produce antibodies against the disease(s) for years and years, probably for life...annual reminders aren't necessary.  It is the dog's own immune system that protects him against disease, not the vaccine itself.

This is the same price for 'puppy jabs' we paid for Spice BC over a year ago now,my sister paid £8!! in North Yorkshire when she lived there in comparison.
I now buy my drontal tabs. off an online vet due to the cost at our local vet,but we still have to go there for the booster jabs each year. Bear in mind that some insurance companies will not cover a dog if the vacs.are not up to date and most kennels will not take a dog who has not had booster jabs.

Totally agree with everything that you have said Joyce :) These are my sentiments. I was furious over the initial jabs for him and the way that it was handled and as I was reluctant to do it anyway it just exacerbated my misgivings. I ended up treating him with homeopathy and organic food to get rid of the horrid thing.

The reason I was going to get him done was in case we had to put him into kennels, it's a long story but I will never take a holiday without the dogs but I am on standby for a flying visit to a relative who also has a male Briard and our 2 fight so the only option would be to kennel him for a few days. Albeit I don't know if or when I will need to go. So I don't really want him done but am stuck for options at the moment. I still have some time to consider it.

Callia will have to have her first jabs and I'm really not looking forward to it :(

I sympathise with your predicament, h/p but is there no other way around the problem (pet sitter or similar) ?  It would be awful for you if you had the same problems as last time.

She's a little minx, so forward and confident but well worth the wait :) She seems to be getting the idea of doing her business in the garden already, considering her age, I'm so proud of her. Mind you, I'm out every minute of the day it seems :rolleyes:

Monsterman went off his food for 4 days and sulked like the big baby he is, he still won't eat within eye sight of her, even when she's in her crate, but he's back to normal now, gets a bit fed up when she keeps biting his willy though :D :D

She sounds adorable ;) but your poor boy :P  Funny, it's always been my guys that sulk with pups too - the bitches just get on with it!
