Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / gsd chewing help!
- By Izzabella [gb] Date 22.02.05 09:23 UTC
I have a 10 month old gsd and she keeps chewing everything! she always goes for things that belong to my 3 year old daughter, whether its her princess slippers, trainers or her toys! when i go out or to bed i pull the sofa accross to try and prevent her getting to anything but she still manages to. Its driving me mad! could anyone advise me please?

It sounds like it would be a good investment to buy a dog gate or a crate to physically prevent chewing at least until the dog grows out of this phase.

Hi Izzabella,

a 10 month pup and a 3 year old child - can just imagine the variety of things around to appeal to the pup who will feel she can share with her best little friend :P

Have you tried getting a kong for her?   It's a large, virtually indestructable cone shaped toy which can be stuffed with food treats (dried kibble for example) or even with soft food (pate, creamed cheese etc).  If your girl is food orientated it should keep her amused for a few hours ;)  They can be bought from most pet shops or larger retail outlets.   She's at the age at the moment where boredom quickly sets in so chewing is pretty common place and it can help to encourage her towards only chewing the right type of things so a major tidy up will be required when you're leaving her!

HTH, Teri :)

I have had a crate for my now 14month old GSD since she was a little 8 week old bundle of fluff. I really don't know what I would have done without it. I think it would be very difficult to get your pup introduced to a crate at this late stage. It took a week for mine to get used to it at 8 weeks old. They are quite costly to buy as it would need to be the largest size but if you can afford it, it would be well worth it. When you think of the cost of things they have chewed it is really worth it.Maybe you could get one secondhand. My baby goes in her crate at bedtime and anytime I have to go out and can't take her with me. This means that she is never free to chew when I can't see her. You have to convince them that this is their den and a happy place to be. I would start with putting the dog bed inside it and also feeding in there, leaving the door open. Every time he goes in of his own accord tell him what a good boy he is and give a small treat. The first time you intend closing the door replace the small treat with a stuffed Kong or a bone (raw). He will make a fuss and loads of barking but ignore all cries. As soon as all goes quiet let him out, and increase the length of time. As a small pup they soon give up but with an older dog this could take quite some time. I found that if I was out of sight it was more successfull. Other than this I can only think that you will have to be vigilant in not leaving things laying around. My husband is the worst culprit as he is only home at weekends and not so much in tune. Good luck LOL
