I know its a funny heading but I have a pup that is
gradually growing bum high.
Has anyone any sugestions how to help.
Someone told me calcuim tablets, and lots of
road work. Will this really help?

its a stage they go through leave him be, he will be fine dont overdo road work just add some in the walk, male pups especially I find go through this stage. If you are feeding him on a quality food you shouldnt need supplements

I agree with Mattie, I've seen a couple of mine go up one end at a time and it's always come out all right in the end

Flying Banana :D Weimaraner

Nutkin, as Mattie said, its the most natural thing in the world. They all do it ;-)

I believe when showing you can try to hide the problem a little by pulling the hindlegs a little further back and wider apart. I've seen bum high puppies and by the time they've stopped growing everything has balanced out.

My flyng banana went through a leggy stage and I was panicking but we're getting there and no longer call him Harry Long Legs ;-)

Actually, now summer is here and shows are outside again, you can take a trowel with you and dig small holes to place the long legs in. That way you can balance the puppy perfectly. If you dig too deep it is preferable to slightly refill the holes slightly rather than digging holes at the other end.

Hope this helps, John :D

I had to laugh at digging a hole.
Thanks for your comments.
He is a Weimaraner to answer what breed he is.
He is being fed Purina so I would assume he is
getting all the correct vitamins, minerals, etc
that he should get. I have been told by a
doberman owner that I should be doing loads of
road work. This is why I asked. As I do not want
to ruin my dog, and all breeds are different.

Don't over exercise your dog - bum high is the norm it has to do with the way bones grow, think I'm right in saying that the longer bones grow first - then the medium ones and the small ones last. It is more noticable in the larger breeds and if you are wanting to show don't worry, most judges will make allowances for his age. If the ring is on a slope face the lad so as to lift the front end, round the other way you will make matters worse.
Oh! and you are only just starting you,ve got the leggy stage to go through yet. All the best. JH

road work wont make one bit of difference, its a growing phase, usually they even out when they reach their final height, although the odd one or two stay that way, but they will be whatever they'll be as far as construction is concerned, --road work can help with tightening pasterns ,but not high bums :D

It is a growth stage very comon in my breed who have modrate angulation. He will grow and the front end will catch up!

Thanks to everyone for your comments you
have made me feel much better.
Also as to one comment about showing that
Judges make allowances, I am glad about that,
as he is shown. Someone had told me if they
get bum high to not take them to shows, but if
the judges allow for this then I can still take him
as he needs experience as he is only a baby of
7 months.

Please don't worry about showing your puppy as it is the best and most exciting of times in the show ring, if only because you never know what will happen. Judges will make allowance but if in your class there is another pup as nice as yours but the other pup is level, then the other pup will win. Does that matter, you and the pup are learning to work together in the ring and in my experiance the quick maturing pup is not always the best dog in the end, so grit your teeth and wait your time, let your baby mature at his own rate. All the best with your showing I hope you and your pup continue to enjoy it and as someone else says 'take the rough with the smooth' and the winning days with the dissapointing ones. Jackie H
