Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Rang towards cyclist

My dog is now one year old.  When he was about 9 months he started to want to chase cyclists, joggers, bids and anything that moved.  I would put him on the lead when I saw any of these approaching and we would continue by and if he went to move towards I would flick his lead and say no.  We now have a frisbee which he is more interested in than anything else.  Yesterday he saw cyclists, boys playing with a football and joggers and he had no interest at all.  When we are walking I also put his lead on him for a few minutes here and there, then I take it off again.  Yesterday we reached the gate where I had parked my car and I called him to come, he looked at me and had a real glint in his eyes and ran off into some trees and then came straight back, as he approached me he saw some people on bikes he ears went back and he just ran like the wind - I called "No" and "Come", but he continued he stopped about 15 feet from the people and ran in a big circle and came straight back to me.  I did start walking in the opposite direction (as I had been told before), but I didn't want the people on the bikes to think I was taking no notice of my dog.  I put him on the lead and he knew by my voice that I was angry.  Also I apologised to the people, but they were fine (luckily).  Up to that point he had been a good boy and we had had an enjoyable walk.

How old is your dobe?  I hate it when he does this, as it seems like he is out of control - but he isn't!  Well mind you he would appear to be at that point!

I would take him to somewhere you can control what happens such as a cycle path and keep well back so he's not too excited, I had the same problem with my Terv and you basically reward him for just looking and not reacting, or for ignoring. Over a few weeks you should be able to get closer and closer to bikes etc  with him not reacting...that's the basics, there's more to it (I used a clicker for instance ). The rewards must be very high value to make it worth him obeying, (ie liver, cheese) and over a period of time you can vary whether he gets a food reward or just praise for doing well.

Ideally you never let him practise the in appropriate behaviour and also use your voice to add control. Eventually he should be able to be let off lead but ensure you feel you have control - you should get an instinct about it after a while.

If he is frightened of the bikes/joggers etc you may need different help and advice because the training would be different.
