Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Which fruit & veg?
- By spaniel-lover [gb] Date 14.02.05 20:39 UTC
I've done a search on this site to try and establish which fruit & veg I can feed to the dogs but am finding it a bit difficult to find a definitive list per say!  Just wondered if those who feed fruit & veg could list what they feed and what should be avoided?  And does it all have to pulped prior to feeding?  They already enjoy supplemented raw meat & bones, but would like to start including the veg as well-you can't argue with the extra goodness!  But in addition, my eldest is starting to fill out a bit around the edges, so would like to cut down his food but fill out his meal with the veggies-will this be adequate?

Mine adore carrots, apples, pears, cauliflower, satsumas or oranges.  I believe grapes are bad for them.

Mine will eat any fruit/veg I give them (and will happily help themselves to the fruit bowl if the dog gate is left open!). It doesn't have to all be pulped (or given at all), but they're more likely to get the nutrients from it if is is. I personally pulp all the veg but often feed the fruit as it is (or squished into a kong... dunno whether this counts as 'pulping'!). They get the occasional carrot to chew whole.

As far as I'm aware, more or less anything is safe except grapes, macadamia nuts, onions and cabbage family. However, this probably depends on the dosage. A bit of onion or cabbage mixed in is unlikley to cause any harm... Trin managed to devour 2 half kilo boxes of quality street/roses at x mas (on different days) with no lasting side effects!! (and she was only about 8 kilos herself at the time!!!)

As for filling out his food with veggies... I don't know, sorry!

Why not cabbage family? Many people recommend giving broccoli as a treat.

Mine get cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts etc etc - any veg (no onions) - I don't buy veg specially for the dogs, they just get whatever I have got in for the humans :D If I feed it as part of their meal, then it gets pulped - otherwise they may get chunks as treats :)

Does giving them cabbage cause more wind?

No idea - haven't noticed it particularly, but then they don't get huge quantities as it's always mixed with other veggies :)

I don't honestly know, and mine certainly get any leftover broccoli from our dinner. I don't eat cabbage myself so this is never an issue, but I will tend not to give them any scraps with much onion in. I think I must have just read it somewhere and believed it. Well, it doesn't do them any harm not to have it in their diet  :-)

I think that they key is to offer variety, they should have a combination of root and 'green' veg. Some say grapes and rasins are bad, but mine havnt suffered any side effects and I cannot find any accademic papers proving/disproving. Onions and leeks shouldnt be fed, although mine get a little in table scraps. Citrus fruit is not often liked by dogs and is not particually good for them, again a little is unlikley to hurt. Tropical fruit is great as high in vits and anti oxidents.

If your dog is putting on weight you could try feeding porrige made with water, filling and not too fatening and gives a slow release of energy so they dont get too hungry and start scavenging :0

Why aren`t citrus fruits particularly good for them?

Did'nt know citrus was bad for them, mine having been having limes, oranges, lemons mixed in their veggie mix for 3 years and this has not done them any harm, in fact they love their citrus fruit.

One of mine will eat a small orange by peeling it if you start it for him, never heard of citrus being bad for dogs

I believe that it is the level of acid in them, never really looked in to it as mine think that it is designed to carry. If you break open a segment they spit it out - 'bout the only thing they dont eat though.

My lot eat almost anything .I have a Juicer that i pulp the Fruit and Veg up in.Mine eat Carrot, Celery, Broccoli, Green Cabbage, Sweet Potato they really like, Sugar Snaps, Water Cress, Any Salad Veggies, they also sometimes have Advocado mashed up .Any fruits and Mango is quite a Favourite and at the moment my lot will do anything for Clementine Oranges . As for bulking out their dinners if they get a bit on the podgy side, and have to say only have 1 boy that puts on weight easily and gets quite a little Porker. I use either Pumpkin or any of the Squash family such as Butternut or Acorn. It really is great and an American friend told me about using that and the good thing is they do not get Wind and it keeps their Poop nice and firm too.LOL

I have read that veg grown above the soil will loosen poops and underground firm them up. I don't actually feed BARF at the moment but have read all the books in readiness. I was just about to start and had ordered my supplies and bought all the supliments and then my baby was diagnosed as having Struvite crystals in her urine and she had to go on a prescription diet. She hates it and has lost 3 kilo's with another 3 weeks to go. Can't wait to be able to give her some proper food.|
