What can I  give safely to my dobe pup to eat he is 10 weeks old, he really does not like the complete puppy food I have been giving him,  He will eat chicken and brown rice but I don,t feel that is giving him everything that he needs, I don,t mind giving him home cooked food but what should I add to it?

Hi Guest,

Unfortunately dobermann pups seem to be the worst at training there new owners what to feed them. I would stick to whatever your breeder has given you for the time being. I would give him his feed 4 times a day, leave the bowl down for 10 minutes and then take it back up. If he doesn't want to eat for a meal or two don't worry he will soon get the idea. Trouble is if you start adding bits to make it more appealing he is just going to expect his everything and you are really going to teach his to be fussy.
Try contacting your puppies breeder and ask then for advice.
What is he being fed on at the moment??

Hope this helps
Debbie

yep hes only 10 weeks old see if you can get back into getting him to eat normal dog food.
I have a fussy eater shes 3 when they start eating human food they even get fussy with that , so try and stick to the breeders food , it will be alot cheaper in the long run too :P my cocker eats a whole chicken a day , Not sure how much dobs eat but can you imagen having to cook 2 whole chickens for his dinner everyday , hes only small now but i bet he will eat alot more when hes bigger

A whole chicken a day? A cocker? Good heavens! My four dalmatians might get that - between them!

My Dobe would have me cooking a roast everynight if it where left to him ;)  Stick with whatever the breeder gave you and you could add some natural yoghurt to it or a bit of grated cheese and if you wet the food it becomes more appetizing to a pup rather than dry all the time -or try a couple of spoons of puppy nature  diet as a taster

It is quite normal for puppies to go off their food for a few days when you first take them home, then again when the start teething.  If you contact me privately I will give you the feeding regime I give to my new owners if you wish.  If you offer him a choice he will naturally take the one  he prefers (we do the same :-)  )

Have a word with your breeder though and see what they advise

4 dalmations for there whole days dinner .
Well tbh she's fussy and only eats the breasts and its eaten in two meals . Shes by no means fat! at just 12kg Shes what the vet said is a prefect weight :) I supose it depends on the size of the chicken too ;)
heres a pic of

My dobermann is now 1 year old.  When we first got him he wouldn't eat and I had to hand feed him.  I fed him on Beta Puppy and I would add in fresh chicken or ham or fish whatever I had really - he has always been okay.  This is the food that my breeder recommended.  He has always been healthy and his coat is lovely, soft and shiny and his eyes very bright.  They are not all the same though - whatever suits your dog!  Today he will have his Beta and I have chicken from yesterday so he will have that with it.

You may find that a change to a lower protein content food and one with no artificial additives and flavour enhancers in it may calm your dog's outlook on life (the hyperguarding for example). Beta is well marketed but chock full of crud, bulk fillers and toxic waste. We changed a young dobe raised by others on Beta to JWB with good effect.

I'm not quite sure what toxic waste you were finding in Beta, but each to their own :)  My Dandie had to come off of JWB as it made her desperately constipated and then settled happily on Beta where those bulk fillers provided her with just the fibre she needed to last her the 15 years of her life, I find it best to feed what suits :)
