My dog has, what I am fairly certain is, a sebaceous cyst very near his top lip.  It is a hard red raised circular lump about the size of a pea.

Has anybody else had experience of these (on their dogs!) and can you tell me if it is likely to go by itself or if it needs veterinary attention?  I'm reluctant to simply call on the vet as I feel he would need a general anaesthetic for a vet to be able to look closely enough :-(

Is there any natural remedy I could explore?

It could well be a subaceous cyst or possibly a wart but there are also some pretty nasty things that can occur in this area so if it was me I would have it checked out by the vets.  Perhaps a sedative would allow an examination.

Hi, I would agree.  My breed are prone to these cysts but they are normally on the trunk.  I would have the vet look at it.

There is a less invasive method of dealing with cysts than the excision method usually used, though if it is on the lip either would be OK.

Here is the link about the method I spoke of.  It is an article about human treatment but applies equally well to dogs (especially as it avoids having great swathes of coat shaved which takes months or even years to regrow).

My oldest FC has had a couple of subaceous cysts taken off with no problems at all. I would prob get it checked, just to be on the safe side.
